32GI bars are really good although they are pricey

 

Love the taste but yes Very pricey. But then what's R30 for a good energy bar when u spend 1000's on a stage race. I'll keep them as a treat for the special races.

Fast fuel had a range of energy bars that was based on real dried fruit. I used to like them a lot, not overly sweet and easy to chow down. Not sure if you get them anymore. Tasty nutritious alternative to energy bars is dates. Fresh if you can get them or the processed compressed type at the supermarket.

I use powerbars the crunchie type for races and long events with bananas and a bit of whatever the races offer in potatos etc.. normal long training jungle bars are good and cost effective. The biggest trick is to learn to get your energy from eating not drinking because on a cold day you don't drink enough and on a hot day probably too much, learn to eat every 30 to 40 minutes, also always put your energy drink in a container that you can see how much you are taking, in a camelback you cannot see what your consumption rate is. I now use half as much energy drinks and more water while riding. 32GI bars are also good, look for the energy bars that don't melt in your pockets and give a sustained energy release.

I'm quite a fan of the Wedgewood Racefood nougat bars. Small and they don't taste like a bodybuilder had a poo in a freezer. But they are quite small so I only use them on shorter rides and longer rides with a banana.

I chomp down a jungle bar and a banana on longer rides but generally don't like the whole chewing thing whilst riding... makes me naar

So as an alternative together with some solids on the ride i make a shake of Nutren which i carry with me... nice to drink, filling and does the job quite well.
