In April there were two group rides advertised on a website called ecmtb.co.za, one the Friday evening and another the Saturday morning. I entered myself and two friends and it cost me almost R500. We organised a place to stay and was all set to go.

The Friday morning of the ride I received an e-mail to inform us that the ride was cancelled and we would be contacted for banking details for a refund.

After numerous unanswered emails I finally got one response telling me they were busy and are trying to arrange a new date.

I have never again heard from them and haven’t received any money back.

Is it normal for organisers to keep your cash when an event is cancelled, or was I conned?

Why was the race cancelled?

What does their re-fund / cancellation policy say? It should be stated clearly on the website.

Personally I say, they should fe-fund you in full and pronto. They cannot keep it for some time later, which might not suit you at all.

By the way, if you paid by credit card, you can also get your bank to reverse the payment, even if it is some time later.

(Peninsula marathon reimbursed me quickly by EFT after their cycling part was cancelled last year. All I had to do was to furnish them with bank details. I first made sure It was legit and then the EFT happened quickly.)
