Watched the full video last night.

Looks awesome and will suit a fast starter with narrow bars (no bar ends) who can ride roots while focusing on the track rather than the many tree's and tree stumps in close proximity, ride switchbacks well and jump....LOL the ideal modern day XC racer.

The following is not a criticism but rather questions to help solve potential problems on race day, and may also be based on incorrect assumptions based on my only seeing the video.

Just wondering about the lack of place to pass on the majority of the single track sections, there seems very little passing opportunity other than the chicken run options (which cannot really be used for passing by riders of more or less equal ability) and the wider jeep track sections.

Do the UCI specify a minimum "rideable" track width for WC courses?

Will there be a start loop before the first narrow section (1 minute into the video), the 2 riders were riding along at a slow pace and it took them a minute to reach it, at race pace there wont be much opportunity for the riders who are not near the front on the start line to improve their position?

Does anyone know how many laps the races will be for the different age groups?

This is still being decided ... but as it stands it the UCI are thinking of the following

30-34 and 34-39 .... 1:30

all other cats - 1:00

Lap is about 20min race time i think - so 4 laps maybe?

all the rule book says about singletrack

4.2.018 Extended single track sections must have periodic passing sections

Remember as well that the singletrack is dual lane track so even though it will bunch up a bit on lap 1 - there is no start loop AFAIK .... it will bunch up on the climb ....

I stand to be corrected but the start is not exactly where nick started from in the video - last year the start was all the way at the end of that road so you had a 400m sprint up the road to start with then that little climb (which is b@stard-ass steep) ... then down onto the singletrack.

So it should be ok - remembering that you will probably start in batches according to your age cat - and currently there are like 50 riders max per cat

Leave me out of it, i'm just back seat commenting here...LOL

Good point about the number of riders per Cat (50), should be ok if they all start at different times.

Off hand do you know if the Masters events will be filmed for TV coverage?

hey guys

please be advised of the following rules

VIII

Chapter MASTERS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

4.8.001 Only licence holders under articles 1.1.001 to 1.1.028 and 4.1.009 may take part in the masters

world championships. A race number is only issued on presentation of the licence.

4.8.002 The riders taking part in the masters world championships represent their country, but are

permitted to use the equipment of their choice.

4.8.003 All details specifically relating to the masters world championships must be obtained directly

from the organiser or from the UCI web site.

4.8.004 The championships are usually organised in 5 year age groups: 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, etc.

Depending on the number of participants in each age group, an age group may be divided into

subgroups of less than five years or joined with an adjacent age group, in which case there is a

single overall classification.

4.8.005 An event is not organised for a specific age group if there are fewer than six riders at the start.

However, there must always be a minimum of 2 age groups per event.

Please be aware that there is a possibility that your cat may be merged with another cat if there are not 6 riders in your age group ... so keep and eye out on the entry lists shown on the website www.mtbworldchamps.co.za

Does anyone who's actually ridden the trail think you can get away with a rigid forked 29er hardtail assuming a rider with above average technical skills?

have not watched it yet...so not sure if its in.... but there is a section that is about 400m of uphill over big rooty section..i.e. 400m of non stop big roots uphill...reckon your arms would take a pounding on multiple laps if you running rigid

There is a section is in the video going uphill over some roots and Nick does mention choosing a smooth line through there to maintain momentum and minimise time loss.

ok just watched the video now - its not that first rooty bit you mention, its the second time he talks about tire pressure - its the section called Jumping Jack...

Love the ending of the video..."and the crowd goes wild"

Think I am going to go ride that this weekend..looks like fun...hope i can remember all the entrances and exits

Does anyone know if we have to organize a race license before hand or will CSA be in PMB to issue day licenses?
