thanks for the help, its interesting as i understand SA didnt get the 2 door gti, thats why the 2 door gt was sold. then VW for some reason decided to make a convertible version of this car which completely unique to SA, compared to the normal mk1 convertible it has a different B pillar design, different roof and most unique of all big lights at the back instead of the small mk1 lights found on all mk1 convertibles. the B pillar has a badge that says GTC by ronde which iv been told is the factory/shop that did the conversion for VW but i cannot find any info to confirm this

I am confused now. A friend of mine had original mk1 gti 2 door with factory sunroof. Not glass, but metal. Def was the gti too, correct trim spec, mags etc

I always loved the corolla, then toyota went all soft and made them a lot less boy racer and a lot more granny/grandpa. But the latest one is back to their old MO and it looks awesome. I have never actually seen one of these ones in real life, think they must be very scarce here in RSA.

There is a 4 door datsungx for sale. Looks like it is in an ok condition. Its driving etc. I am so contemplated to buy it, but dunno if I want to go so deep into a restore.

It is a lifetime job. Even once it's restored, you are constantly working on it. I have a CAPRI and I spent many hours working on it and it's worth it when you do get to drive it. It has been parked for a few years due to having kids but as soon as time becomes available again I will carry on with it.
