i have never done a canoe tri, how would you compare the transition from swim/bike to canoe/bike Lylo i guess it may be easier with the Canoe as you are mostly using upper body?

Swim ..... dont think Kulula allows bikes and canoes on planes so I dont see how people coming from out of town have a choice

Swim is also faster

having the swim would allow more people to participate as not everyone has a canoe lying around, love the idea though, maybe in the future have both options available

Agreed - but many people want to participate in a triathlon, but are concerned about swimming so includes those participants with canoe option :)

Yes would agree with that comment: hence the option is open to either canoe or swim - your choice on which discipline you're stronger at!

both options are available Scott, you can do the canoe or the swim, i am really looking forward to seeing the canoes line up again! its been a long long time since we have had a canoe triathlon, and interestingly for the old school guys that still remember Henk Watermeyer and Nic Bester from the old Ironman days, both have confirmed that they are going to be taking part! its going to be great to see these two rivals take each other on again

I think any person owning a canoe is familr with the water and most likely a decent swimmer - i dont see people who are afriad of the water having canoes ... just a thought

Initially it can be "strange" when you get out the canoe because often a leg or both legs can go a bit numb, never figured out quite why it happens (legs out forward / parallel or from sitting on nerve / pressure point) but by the time you get to your bike in the transition things should be feeling normal again.

i dont agree totaly JGR there is a big difference between being a "good" swimmer and being able to swim two km's,there are alot of people that find the swim leg of a sprint tri daunting let alone a ultra event, i know alot of serious canoe triathletes that stopped competing when the swim tris took off. i do however agree that people that own canoes are not scared of the water and are decent swimmers but to swim long distance is a different animal

thanks Swiss! so you would agree that the transition would be easier from a canoe? i have always found the hardest part of a tri is to get your legs going on the bike after a swim.

That is a great idea, there might still be a lot of canoe triathletes from that era still active (in other forms) and hopefully they will come support the race

Its been such a long time since I did a canoe tri, but I would say that there is not much difference between the 2, your legs are probably slightly more ready after a swim than canoe but i'd say its splitting hairs...

There is a difference between a fast swimmer, strong swimmer and good swimmer and you dont have to be any to complete 2kms. 2kms or 40 mins is not far considering this is an ultra event (in a dam)

Canoe triatheltes? thing of the past and I would say that changing from canoe to swim made the sports much more accesible
