In an informal challenge@ Ermelo club the roadies and mounties have challenged each other to race from Ermelo to Wakkerstroom and see who gets there first. Our roadies will go via Amersfoort and Volksrust whilst the mounties will use the backroads. The mounties have an approx. 10 km advantage and will probably be given another 10 min extra. Distances are approx. 110km and 120km.

There is no exact formula (yet) to level the playing fields. We'll see how it pans out.

Any suggestions to make it fair?

Feel free to join us - nothing formal.

I would say a ratio of 2 to 1. Ie a Road distance of 100km equals to 50km mtb.

I did the argus in 3 30 and i normally ride mtb at 14km per hr on average. But thats on proper mountain trails with lots of climbing. If they just ride gravel rds MTb could average 20 -22km per hr so ratio should change to 100km rd = 75km mtb

So depending on the course it looks like your MTB dudes are going to get a hiding.

I do not think our roadies have it in them, but if they should import someone we'll look at increasing the delay with 25 min. I was also told that 100km for a roadie compares to about 70km for a mounty. This would imply approx. 30 - 40 min difference.

Do not know who the roadies are but if relatively fit they should do it in around 3 Hours, it not really that hilly, so can not see the MTB's have a chance , but that depends on fitness levels of course.

I would agree with the above ratio of 2 to 1. Start there, see how it goes and adjust accordingly for the next time.

This will only be a test run. Like I mentioned, the mounties will get a 10 km plus maybe 15 - 30 min headstart. Once we have the results we'll get an idea of how to improve on the formula. We thought of swopping bikes the next round and compare times. problem is all the variants - skills, fitness levels, how you feel on the day etc...

Still - it's gonna be fun. We'll use Strava as our measuring tool.

I did 95km on my MTB last monday, all tar with a roadie buddy. I did it in 3:20 with a halfway stop. So on a road bike just over 3 hrs for a average guy is on. The same distance on single track, etc is a different story, speed gos way down, only time u can really push pace is on district road, otherwise its u on ur own on the single tracks with no help or drafting... Good luck, Keep us updated

O Es, if u are ranked in the top 25 in the Kia rankings, then maybe it is on!!!!
