AC ligament shoulder separation

All the best for the recovery. Paste a pic of the shoulder, or better even, the stress X-ray of the joint. Except for all the kit and equipment posts, this will have value for the other members who might find them in a similar situation in the future.

Have a speedy recovery.

Same thing happened to me 3 years ago. Doctors gave me 2 options, 1. Surgery and would then have some limited movement, or 2. leave it and deal with the bone sticking up on my shoulder and strengthen the shoulder muscles.

I went with option 2. It took a couple months for the pain and discomfort to completely disappear and now it doesn't worry me in the slightest. I don't think I have any less power in my arm, and have full range of motion in my shoulder ... all I have is a bone sticking up on my shoulder.

I had the surgery but I remember after the fall --no pain doctor said its because the nerve runs with the tendons which are now all snapped off.

Good luck

got a grade 2 AC shoulder ligament injury - saw Dr Basson at N1 City hospital - orthopaedic surgeon speciality is shoulder injuries - advised me to keep arm in sling for 7 weeks but no surgery unless pain persists after this period. Hope this helps a bit. Get well soon. I'm still battling a bit after 8 weeks!

Now for some not too serious observation from these post, considering that stats don't lie, is objective in the eye of the beholder and can prove everything.

It seems that the Western Cape okes are more prone to AC joint injuries. Now to determine the reason why? Any ideas.........

My excuse: bombing down a single track faster than what my skill level could handle. It is so easy to get ahead of yourself when you're having fun.

Its been two weeks now and I've started with light physio. No real pain and I'm feeling good about my recovery.

A quick update: It's been almost 7 weeks now and things are looking good. I have pretty much full range of motion back again and no pain.

I've kept my shoulder supported throughout with kinesio tape (the cheaper hybrid which works just as well). The physio gave my wife lessons on how to tape me up. While giving the skin a break in between taping I wear a compression vest which helpes to push the shoulders back and keep good posture. This all seems to help keep the bump down and makes it feel good psycologically.

I've moved on from the latex strap exercises to 2.5 kg dumbells- doing benchpress, flys and shoulder press everyday with ease and no pain. I will increase the weight to 5kg this weekend and see how that feels. If its all good then my plan is to try a light trail ride the week after and see how that goes.

I have gone the "rest 'n physio" route, and I've almost regained full strength in my shoulder.

Crashed in Feb this year, was off the bike for 2.5 months - as per the doc's instructions.

Went to physio after 6 weeks, every week for 5 weeks.

Got the thera-band (blue) to do daily stretches, then eventually chick-pushups and then guy-pushups.

While it still hurts when I sleep on the right side, it isn't that bad.

The bump is there, and I've been told it will remain like that for like.

Did my first race last weekend and was happy to survive the full 111Km.

If I can find my xray photo, I will post it so you can compare.

It is amazing how the body can heal itself with the correct intervention and proper care. Except for a similar AC-joint injury, I have also had an Achilles tendon rupture. The scan indicated a complete rupture (14mm rupture) but I knew it was not the case as I still had some plantarflexion left in the ankle. Opted for the conservative route ( no surgical repair) with intervention. Still working on gaining calve volume, but otherwise no problem with ankle function.

Don't know what grade mine injury was.

5 years ago Playing rugby I went to score a try and two guys tackled me and we all went over the line and our combined weight landed on my shoulder. some thing popped and I couldn't move my arm so well. Stood up and something popped again and thought it must be fixed. Carried on playing and the first time I tackled someone I discovered a new meaning to pain.

Doc had to operate that afternoon. Re-dislocate collar bone cause it had been pushed back in wrong and was now pinching a nerve and blood vessel.

after that they drilled a hole in the collar bone, took a tendon from my delt and threaded it through the hole and reached it somewhere.

Four months later I played in our clubs semi-final and had no issues. Been fine since played over 30 rugby games.

I have a small little bump where the tendon goes through the collarbone that can be sore if I have had huge pressure on it for a while like after using the standing calf raise machine at the gym. But other than that nothing at all.

I had it, twice.

Don't do the op, it's a waste of time.

Rehabilitation will take a while, but you always have surgery to fall back on the next time you buy the farm.

If you're in jhb I can give you Megan's number.

She will make it good again.

A few of the Spruit rats have used her to put their shoulders back together when they ran out of talent on their jumps

Hi, I see you posted this back in 2013, however, I am looking for someone who is willing to try conservative measures with a type 3 AC joint dislocation. I live in JHB and was hoping you could pass on the persons details who helped you with your rehabilitation. I'm only 19 and don't want to go the surgery route.
