Hello hubbers

I need to service the freehub on my GF's Mavic Crossmax SLR wheel (I think its 2010 or earlier based on the red hubs).

I have downloaded the tech docs and it seems pretty simple.

The question I have is based on this note in the doc which applies to the freehub body seal:

"The new seal has been designed to minimize the friction caused by its direct contact with the free wheel body:

• A more supple material

• New Teflon surface treatment.

Frictional torque is thus halved.

Hence, excessive lubrication of the seal serves no purpose: a drop of Mavic mineral oil M40122 suffices.

Use only Mavic mineral oil M40122. The use of grease or any other oil will irreparably damage the components of the free wheel system and voids the Mavic warranty."

Do I really need to use Mavic mineral oil? Does it need to be mineral oil? (I have seen rubber seals and o-rings expand, rendering them useless when they came in contract with other greases and oils)

What is a good substitute for expensive mineral oil?

Thanx

Carefully remove seal by gently levering it past pawls ( depress them taking care not to lose them) . Clean the seal and refit, drip a couple of drops on lip of seal - not to much otherwise it will attract dust you only want to stop it becomming brittle which will happen if you dont service it. Worthwhile doing as new seals retail between R30-50.

I haved used a thin 3in1 type oil in mine for 2 year with zero problems?

i think the key is that oil is nice and thin ie. low viscosity. so the bush / pawl system works nicely.

If you put grease or thick oil in there, then the pawls stick and dont engage.

Most oils work in there. And if it doesn't, simply wash off and try something else.

Must agree - teflon is a pretty hard plastic...unlike rubbers (especially the ones in brakes)...and should withstand all sorts of oils and additives that they might have in them...

Mineral oil... is mineral oil... is mineral oil....but is NOT DOT x type oil!!

Ja, it is not the plastic bush we're concerned with, but the soft black rubber seal that seats against that plastic bush. Ostensibly, if there are chlorine or other rubber-swelling compounds in the oil, it swells the seal and makes it sticky. Typically Q-20 would do that. However, once that is taken care of, I can't see what Mavic in on about. I have quite a few dozen customers with those wheels are they seem to suffer no ill effect from synthetic or mineral oil.

Oil away, I say.

Thanx all for the advice. @Zatek, thanx for the offer, I will you know if I don't come right.

I have some synthetic motor oil 10W at home, would that be ok?

I rebuilt my Crossmax SX rear hub last night.

Cleaned it out good and proper with isopropyl alcohol. Then applied a small amount of 3in1 mineral oil which I got off the shelf at PnP.

I shall test ride today and see how it goes.
