I am lying in hospital after undergoing hip replacement surgery. As a keen mountainbiker i am quite concerned that this could put a serious block on that hobby. Are there any hubbers out there who have been through this or have any advice to share. Thanks

I had it done and was on a stationary bike in my lounge after 4 weeks and was on a bike after 8 weeks.I then did not listen to my doc and tried playing squash again.Buggered up the muscles

2 lessons

Cycling is good for new hips and squash is bad

Listen to your doc and do your exercises

Who did it btw.Chis McCready was my surgeon

Firstly a speedy recovery.

My wife's uncle had one about 18 months ago. He is back riding, he rode Argus this year and has done a few shorter mtb events. He isn't and never was a racing snake, but he is out there doing it.

According to him there hasn't been a massive issue on the bike. Although the recovery was quite hectic.

Have a chat to your specialist and find yourself a really good physio to help with your recovery.

Good luck

Was on an IDT within four weeks. Slow recovery to pre op days but very, very possible. Listen to your body, doctors have to play it safe. Cycling is good for the circulation and in my case is not a problem.

You will be o'k and will get there.. hang in and good luck.

My doc is Eugene Pelser, he is a keen cyclist and swimmer himself. He is suggesting sticking to road cyclingwhich i will do for the first couple of months but mountain biking is where i want to be.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

However do not get drawn back into MTB too quickly and do not put yourself at risk with that shiny new hip... I have had two major hip surgeries subsequent to an accident, the muscles really took a while to get back into the swing of things.

Good luck!

The recovery rate is very rapid in the beginning. All was going swimmingly.I had my op in Feb 2011 and was hiking over Kgale and riding Seamus's single track by July with a hike through Fish River Canyon planned for August.

Then I buggered it up.
