I have a set of 2012 American Classic Race 29er wheels they are great wheels I am just concerned about the durability of the wheels for the Epic next year. Should I build up a set of ZTR crest using the am classic hubs or are the am classics up for the Epic.

I weigh 80kgs and will try to get down to 75kgs for the Epic.

Why would,t they last if they have up to now

I have only used them for 1 day races and the Sani.

The toughest terrain they have been ridden on is at VG and the Maggalies Monster.

So then they have been tested enough .Epic terrain is not worst than magalies monster or sani .,just longer stages .Spend your cash on shoes with nylon soles ,so you don,t get blisters when you walk

Will they last or not?

Who knows. I did the CPT on Crests in 2012. They survived without a scratch. I destroyed 2 WTB frequency rims in the Barberton Classic in 2013. My partner banged his rear Arch EX rim during the 2013 Epic on a blooming side walk!

Roll of the dice.

Statistically speaking a stronger rim will last longer. Very much like some kind of rare disease. Say only one in 1000000 of people gets it. But you are the chosen one. Then your chances are 100%.

I am trying to manage the risk as best I can, that is why for the sake of 100grams or so I would rather go for a rim that can forgive my mistakes when I am tired and not picking good lines.

Any parts u use for the Epic need to be ones that spares are readily available for. Nothing that requires 'exotic' bearings etc that can't be found at one of the bike shops or vendors at the Epic. I ditched my Industry Nine custom lightweight wheels in favour of a set of heavier, more robust Mavic Crosstrails in case I broke a spoke or part in the hub or needed a bearing or freewheel body. Shimano and SRAM both support at the Epic, best to go with parts they'll have stock of just in case.

Better consider a wheel as a whole then - the big issue is the hub surviving the pressure washers....

I dinged one of my crests at the CE this year - flattened and cracked the flange at a spoke hole - didn't notice it at all till the bike got home (may have done it on the last day) but replaced the rim as a precaution... and I am 65kg...

I don't think there is any rim that will give you a guarantee.... for me, my hope/crest combo is fine, easy to find spares, great seals on the hubs - if I weighed more I would look at stronger rims - Flow or Arch EX's probably.

I agree, more a question of whether you will get spares.

I would just replace the rear rim with a Crest or Arch, front takes less hammering. It is great having the wide light AM race rim on the front.

This combo works well for me and I will be using it again on this years CPT.

You could use the new AM 101 rims, 380grams ( about the same as Crest) and stronger, nice and wide

We are about the same weight.
