As I'm about to head to PMB in a couple of days, this question has been in my head a bit...have read a bit about how World Champs is taken a lot more seriously than World Cups (which is not to say that the riders don't put the hearts into the latter!). But what really is the measure of the year's best rider? Winning a one-day event of amassing points and being the most consistent rider throughout a year? Thoughts?

In my mind; World Cup Leader is better than World Champ, more consistent rider. But to the riders World Champ is best, once off, and you get to wear the hoops.

Enjoy it, wish I could go but work is busy.

Definitely the World Cup to define the Worlds Best rider OVERALL ....

You need to be consistent on ALL tracks, in ALL conditions and it is no wonder that the Winner of the World Cup Overall is generally ranked as the No 1 Rider in the world.

BUT Worlds is a different kettle of fish altogether - it is like Olympics - a once off crack at a title that is exceptionally coveted! You can really hold your head up to say you have won it, even if there was some luck invovled, or the weather conditions changed in your favor etc.

Yeah, that's kinda how I was thinking. I guess there is also a BMT element to Champs!

Oh, and congrats again! Will buy you a beer in a couple of days!

And that is coming from one of our very own WORLD CHAMPS!!!

Well done Nige. Now get out there and sort the tape out on the Elites cos the wind is pumping up here in How-hick

haha! I was about to say, "spoken like a true world champ"

I think they all want the world cup trophy more than the world champs, but that does not mean they dont covet the stripes any less. The World champion also seems to have more media exposure as it is a once off

I remember an interview with one of the DH contenders, and them saying that in world cup events they don't give it 100%, as they need to stay injury free and don't want to risk it all. Whereas at world champs they let it all hang out since second place means nothing.

There was some hint in Privateer's stripes feature a while back.

hhmmmm...............

we need to ask danny hart, been a world champ (at both junior and elite) but never won a single world cup event.......

they should make the champs a bonus round of the cup series and give it double points or something......especially insce it happens now before the world cup series is over........

Last year in Morzine all the brits went on about was Danny Hart the world champ. They made out like he was the best rider that ever lived. I kindly reminded them that although Sam Hill hasn't been on form for a while, he has far more behind his name than Danny.

Not to even mention legends like Nico Vouilloz

Not so sure about this. Certain riders have been known to take it easy in the World Cup series (avoid injury, fatigue etc etc) to ensure they have a good crack at the Champ title... I could name a few that I suspect are doing just that this year . Going to result in an epic World Champs battle.

what I was trying to say is that I'm sure even with those stripes, Hart is dying to win a World Cup event and a series (he hasn't won one right?, think was high as 2nd)

Danny Hart is all show too much show IMO. If he actually rode the bike more and danced on it less he'd have to be quicker on a more regular basis.

Yeah, he's too eratic. He peiced together one brilliant run in one race. the rest of the time he's either hurting himself, or riding so loose that he loses the "fast" part.

guys like GM are super consistent. Others like Hill and Gwin have had their times where they rode a cut above the rest

Then there are youngsters like Loic Bruni who won the World Cup and World Champs last year (Juniors) and no one could come close.

I expect great things form Bruni in a few years
