Recommended Posts

Ok hello mullets,

I tried these (MAXXIS Crossmarks) , and I  must admit I enjoyed them a lot till I took them to Braamfontein Spruit the past weekend, now I have a cutt and I am thinking that my Sani2C is at risk should I use the crossmark..they look a bit dodgy...too thin? anyone out there with a similar problem on the crossmark?

Love my Crossmark.  Barely a puncture in a year!

What tyres are you used to running mullet?  Are these the UST Crossmarks you are runnning or the normal light jobbies?

crossmark or larsen is the best. if you got a cut it was really bad luck. Have been riding 3 years with them now putting a new pair on each year.  They are a bit heavier i think but definately bomb proof. Did epic 2006 on crossmark. Did not take spare tube with for whole race. 2007 was on larsen. and yes. Did not take a tube again. I actually hit a rock so hard that the rim bent and could not use back brake due to buckle and bulge in rim but still no puncture. It is really tough as nails and would not ride anything else.!

Try and get the LUST (lightweight ultimate sidewall technology) version and then forget about your tires.

No punctures, no cuts, no problems.

I've done about 2500km since Nov on my crossmarks with no problem.  My rear one is looking rather slick now though.  What sort of km are you guys getting on a set?  My front crossmark is fine.

Paul, are you dong a lot of mileage on tar?  That kills a mtb tyre quick, but the crossmarks are quite tough.  SHould get more out of them than most mtb tyres.  The Larsen TT's I found to be a bit softer and they run down quicker.

I have not thrown away a Crossmark from old age yet. I have gone through 3 Crossmarks where the beading separates from the tyre, and Stan's can't seal it. And this last weekend Mrs Velouria's Crossmark started delaminating - a bubble formed between the outer tread rubber, and the inner casing.

Chatting to the bike shop, they have had other customers with similar problems, so it isn't my rims, or the way I ride. Must have been a bad batch of tyres.

I was a big Crossmark fan - they got me through the Epic without any hassles, but I will not buy another one.

Funny you should post this, I have crossmarks as well, and did a spruit ride on sat, and noticed a sidewall cut when I got home. Was going to change them out anyway for sani2sea....they don't preform that well in mud. Got

Kenda Nevegals...will see how they are.

All i can say is when Christof Sauzer came to test the maxis Larsens the first time he came back from his test ride the first time in stellenbosch and he said you cant even compare them to pythons... He used to turn the larsen around on the back tire so that the "dimpels" were showing in reverse. He said it gave him better traction and braking. He subsequently had a great deal in the design of the crossmark hence the swiss flag and cross in the middle of tyre.  Think if it is good enough for him its ok for us normaly people...

I got about 3000 km on my last Crossmarks.  Not a puncture, riding in Southern Cape rocky conditions.  Only problem is the delamination problem when the tyre is really on its last legs - this unfortunately seems to be standard for Crossmarks.  For Epic I will not use any other tyre, but for Sani2C, will use a more all-round tyre - it seems that it is going to be wet this year, so a tyre with more widely spaced lugs would be better, e.g. Kenda Karma, Kenda Nevagal, Schwalbe Nobby Nic, Maxxis Ignitor, etc.

My bicycle came with Larsen TT USTs.  They lasted about 5000km including a lot of tar riding (commuting to work).

At 2500km I took them off and put Kenda Nevegals on for the Sani2c.  The Larsens were still fine inside - no bubbles or anything like that.

The Nevegals lasted about 1200km and then I put the TTs on again.  This time I added Stans.  When I bought the Stans the guy at the bike shop told me that it "eats" the rubber very slowly, but if you ride often you will wear out the tyres before Stans has messed them up.

Sure enough, when I took the TTs off after about 5000km there were bubbles between the tread and casing.  If the shop owner is right, the bubbles are due to the Stans and is not a problem with the Maxxis themselves.

Has anyone who does not use Stans have had these bubbles on Maxxis?  When I used slyme it did not happen...

And by the way: the Kenda Nevegals are great tyres for the Sani2c.  They are rather heavy, but I haven't had any problems with them.

Kenda Karma tyres are good if you dont have tubeless rims or conversion kit running, they have been horrible to seal from my experiences.

I've not had problems sealing Kenda Tyres. It might be you Rims GIRR? Maybe it's got a nic/dent in?
