So, I was chilling in my garden yesterday afternoon looking onto the park accross the road when I thought...

"It would be so awesome to have some small jumps and a mini pump track across the road for a quick everyday after work session to ease the tension from the day."

That thought is now haunting me!

The park is not busy (like the spruit), it is flat and in a small quiet suburb in the east and I really dont plan on using much space at all! The section of the park that I have in mind is along one of the sides and out of the way.

If I plan to build (without digging), I will bring in sand and other building materials (wood/rubble) do I need to get permission and if so where do I start?

A few guys in PE built a small bmx track on a open park and had endless problems. Not actually sure what happened with it.

How do the other residents feel about it?

we currently have an issue in slumtown regarding a similar issue.

I suggest you contact your ward councilor and discuss the issue with him/her and assist you with getting the required approvals from fellow residents and the municipality.

Residents is easy, I can go door to door. Municipality on the other hand I have no clue where to start without getting the run around.

Pretty sure that if you got a few signatures to support you from the neighbours it''ll be much easier.Contact your local ward councillor and get him involved to.

Action plan...

  • Put together a proposed build layout.
  • Wonder around the park with my hands behind my back whistling (for days) waiting for a few people to use the park, discuss with them and try get them to support the cause.
  • Contact ward councillor.

get in touch with your local knock and drop - probably Boksburg Advertiser - your ward Councillor details should be in there as well as writing a letter and see what the local response is like.

Been there, done that. Contacted my local ward councilor as well as a representative from Parks and Gardens. Arranged a meeting with the both of them and they were in agreement but they wanted resident approval as well as indemnity signs and for somebody to be responsible for the area surrounding it (Litter and maintenance etc). Drafted a proposal with aerial views and planned layout etc and went door to door with an approval petition. I got about 90% buy in from all concerned. Just one household wasn't happy...... Plan went out the window.

In hindsight I should have just grabbed a spade and started digging. If you go that route though be prepared for all your hard work to be destroyed by parks and gardens on a regular basis because they will come and flatten what you build.
