I hang mine on the tusks of a warthog skull in my study, together with a huge bunch collected over many years. I make no distinction between special ones or common ones. I have thought of throwing the lot away, but refrained this far. Perhaps one day when I'm old and the memory starts to fail, rubbing one between my fingers will bring back pleasant memories of a race I did.

Pretty much all of mine dangle on a similarly convenient and randomly chosen hook. I have only 1 special one, and that will be going in a frame soon.

I go along with your sentiments............I do not believe that every single rider in every race should get a medal. Those who have achieved by maybe being top 3 or top 10 in their class or the race etc, but not every single rider. I personally do not believe i deserve a medal unless you win or podium in your category etc. A medal for a great race, like Epic or comrades i think is different, as finishing either is a helluva achievement.

Finishing Argus or 94.7 or the average 50km MTB race is IMHO not worthy of a medal.

When my ten year old finishes a 17km *race* after battling through mud, ruts etc does he not deserve something?

When a new rider goes out and completes a funride battling against his fitness and the elements should he or she not get something that shows, to them at least, they achieved something that even a short while before they would not have managed?

Epic or Comrades different? Thats just scale.

You can be sure the guys posting here saying that it means nothing are the ones who will make the biggest noise when they don't get one at the end of the race.

Why did you even bother to take it home ? Why not throw it in the nearest bin?

Just wondering.

If a medal doesn't mean anything to you, make it into something that has meaning for you.

This is what I do (and you can "ahhhwwwww"- like in the movies - afterwards :P ). After every race I take a black marker and write down something about the race I just completed on the back of the medal ribbon. Anything that will make me remember the race, things like (and these are actually some of mine):

"first sub 3 94.7 and drinks with the Coca Cola girl" (94.7 2012)

"first MTN series on new BMC, cracked helmet and moer hard!" (MTN Rooberg 2013)

"first road race ever, rain and wind but awesome" (Amashovha 2011)

etc...

In a few years time my medals will be telling the stories I'd forgotten!

Ok Ok, I eat my words..............most of them. Epic or Comrades and races of a similar nature are quite a different kettle of fish and take a helluva lot of commitment and hard effort to do. Much more so than your average race. No way you can compare someone with an Epic Medal to someone with a 94.7 medal. And no, i haven't got an Epic Medal nor a Comrades medal.

And kids definitely should get a medal no matter what.

ever so often I will sit down with the missus for some "quality time" and help her with her hobby - scrapbooking. since I made the promise to get het cycling with me I will do that with her. so the medals we collect at races go into the "book of memories". plus I score brownie points :whistling:

I'll rather get a week of lip than spend 1 minute 'scrapbooking'
