I would say the best bike for the Argust would be one you dont have to pedal

I found one. Perfect for Suikerbossie.......

Did a sub-4 on a 26" with MTB tyres, just train enough and use your existing bike. If you want to spend money, buy a 29'er.

I will say what everyone told me, and I'm the same age as you. Any bike will do!!

Just ride it for fun! You only ever get 1 first Argus. Slap a pair of slicks on it and go for a finish. Make all the decisions after the race as to whether its worth exploring buying another bike.

Good luck and remember the most important thing

HAVE FUN!

Use what you have. There is nothing more satisfying that passing a roadie on your 26'' MTB.

And remember to smile and wave when you pass them :whistling:

Liar liar pants on fire! You did not smile and wave when you passed me! :whistling:

Plenty of 26er MTBers cycled with me up 'Bossie without walking, and there was this huge bloke cycling one on the Blue Route that I could not shake. Given he had humongous calves but I would pass him on the slight downhills, then he would come past me on the flat again.

In fact, on some of the downhills a MTB would be better because of the terrible road surface. Especially on the descent down into Scarborough. That one is quite bumpy.

If you want to improve your time at minimum cost, keep an eye out for a nice old road bike on the hub or wherever. Should be able to get one pretty easily for R1500, but buy before the preargus rush starts ;).

He can't improve his time no matter what he does!!

Stick to what you have and get those free slicks.

+1

Last year I did the argus just for fun, came in just over 4 hours, enjoyed it a lot, chatting, stopping at the drink stations, taking a pi$$ etc. slap on the free slicks from the generous hubber and take it from there.

I have a simple philosophy, road bike on the road, MTB(26,29 & 27.5) off road! Find a cheap road bike on The Hub or Gumtree you will not be sorry!

  • 4 months later...

not advise as I can't offer any but:

I am mid 40's

I am new to riding

I am doing my first Argus this year

I ride a 26" mountain bike on slicks

I will be using it for the Argus.

so if you go for the cheap option you won't be alone, probably ahead of me though asI am offshore for the six weeks preceeding which somewhat limits training.

If it helps I ride the MTB as it was a very good buy, full carbon and I am not small at 6'4" so need a strong bike.

I have an old (and I mean old) Dawes road bike I was going to use until this came up.

I like the mountain bike: I will get shot down in flames on this forum but at my age and fitness the upright position is easier on my back and I can soften the forks for decents, again easier on the body.

I realise it is not so fast but is the Argus really a race or a ride? OK it's timed and I don't want to embarass myself but maybe more of the experienced people should stop worrying about their seedimg and saving a few seconds and encourage the inexperienced instead of complaing about them? There areplenty of good races during the year, keep this one as an event..

So if its your first time you are probably starting near me, PA.

lke I said I dont want to embarass myself but I don't want to spoil the Experience by worrying too much.

one final point - my MTB came with bar ends, if you don't have them maybe try? I find them very good on the hard climbs - and to me pretty much any climb is hard!
