ha ha...a mate's heading off to the great trek now with a pair of hardtails...I reckon puffadder on a hardtail must be quite bumpy

I have ridden a couple of stage races now and B&B was my first on a carbon hardtail. It's easy riding a hardtail on the downhills like puffadder, it's the sections of track where you are riding on rough terrain like grassroots and lots of bumps that kill you on a hardtail.

Unfortunately for me, i went into B&B trying to get over the flu, needless to say, i feel terrible this week. It was an amazing race and i grinded it out. My strategy was to stop as little as possible so i i kept those wheels turning all the time and managed to maintain D batch for the race.

Is it really important whether it was 32 or 42.0258 degrees?

It was moerse hot, way hotter then other races I have done in SA. Incl. sabie, Barberton, VG and the berg wind did not help.

Bottom line, great race and the water points were well stocked and the riders are ultimately responsible for their well being on the bike. The org. within reason can provide support, they did exceptionally well.

Rouxtjie and JC, way more fun going down Pofadder. You boys would have smashed that trail up.

If you ride up some bodies arse up Mikes and expect not to be impede you are at fault. Give them space and you will make it. We went up with 4 teams together and 2 riders had to get off, everybody else made it without an issue. Nobody got away and we continued to ride together.

I'm just grumpy that I'm not doing the Trek and 2 day as well.

Averaging 4 days a week is how we trained for Epic this year and how we'll train for J2C next year. And we did a lot better than finish within the allotted time each day on Epic. For me training is a far more about quality and intensity (and of course rest) than quantity.

So back on topic absolutely no reason why anyone can't comfortably complete 3 day stage races on 2 - 3 days of training per week. Go in there with realistic expectations, pace yourself accordingly and ride within your technical ability.

4 times a week at what hours ?

Also, don't use words like averaging, 6 days here and three days there is not 4

The previous post was referring to weekend hackers riding 4 casual rides a week.

My mate and I trained 1 day a week, sometimes fitting in a 2 hour mid week training session, we finished roughly 220/500 teams with a total time of around 12 hours 15.

The two day event this coming week end looks to be the other extreme - cold & wet!

Aha well.......

Aah well after the heat of the Crater Cruise, cold may not be all bad.

I don't normally buy race photos, but I'm definitely going to buy these.

Day 1 - Hot, red and suffering and this was only at the Great Wall

Day 3 - Think I was enjoying the cooler weather a bit :-)

I won't post day 2's pic, you can see too much of the suffering in my face....

My version of this is also my favourite photo. Really nice action shot with a stunning view in the background.

General program for me...2 x 1hr sessions midweek and a 3hr ride on the weekends.

We were headed for about 25th overall but my partner had the craziest day on a bike on Day 3...early crash, then broken chain, later rear-wheel self-ejecting, knocked off bike coming out the JoJo tunnel...

Awesome experience though - must be very close to SA's best 3-day!

I was 220th! My partner finished stage one and said: "this is the furthest I've ever gone on a bike in one go!". That was in 5h30.
