I think this is the way to go in identifying a stolen bike, any thoughts?

Is your bicycle an easy target for thieves?

Having your bicycle stolen can be expensive, inconvenient and frustrating. That's why it's essential to take appropriate measures to protect your valuable asset.

DataDot® is a popular choice for those who wish to protect their bicycle. Technologically advanced, easy to apply and cost effective, DataDot® is the number one option for your theft prevention needs.

How does DataDot® work?

Hundreds of DataDots are brushed onto various locations on your bicycle.

The unique code on each DataDot is then stored on a secure national database, which can be accessed by police if your bicycle is stolen.

The DataDots are almost invisible to the naked eye, but can be detected by a UV light and magnifying device.

It's virtually impossible to locate and remove all the DataDots, making it extremely difficult for thieves to sell your bicycle or its parts without fear of being caught.

Warning stickers act as a further deterrent to thieves.

Benefits of DataDot®

Easy application - DataDots can be applied quickly and easily.

Cost effective

Peace of mind - If your bicycle is stolen, its ownership is easily traceable via the secure DataDot® national database.

Proof of ownership - The unique laser etched code on each DataDot links your bicycle back to you, making it virtually impossible for thieves to sell it safely.

Insurance savings - Enjoy a range of potential insurance discounts and incentives.

Awareness - Business Against Crime and the police have acknowledged the effectiveness of DataDot technology in theft prevention.

How many bike shops out there have the ability to read datadots? That said, im sure more than 90% of all stolen bikes are probably pawned off privately and not to a reputable organisation or shop, making datadots a bit redundant?

I had the same concerns about the datadots in my my previous VW which was stolen in March. not a single damn thing came from them, and the cops have yet to even sniff out my car, let alone dismantled pieces.

IMO... Datadots dont help and is just another cost to incur with the thought of possibly getting it back after theft, maybe 5% possible.

Not bad, Still dont see why we have to go through all this trouble to protect what we have worked so hard for. However i dont see how it would help prevent bike-jacking, and with the state our SAPS force is in i doubt they would even know how to use the database to see if the bike has these on.

Doomed from the start!! SORRY TO BURST YOUR BUBBLE....

But yuo'll need to first set in place an effective recovery system...where ALL police etc. have the ability (1) to KNOW about the data dots. (2) have the equipment to scan all bikes they recover..

I just don't see this as a workable solution for South Africa (Europe /states = yes!) - we have unique 3rd world issues!!
