Would you perhaps be willing to make Durban your next holiday destination of choice..... :whistling:

Haha. Dude you guys have Nigel and The dude that builds in Karkloof (can't rem his name now) My efforts are pathetic compared to those 2 guys.

Enter the world of Enduro ... hopefully this will also stimulate interest in Gravity riding and specifically DH Racing.

One day when I am all grown up I will give it a spin and I am sure there are many ladies out there who would also follow into DH in a similar manner.

I threw my leg over a DH bike before the introduction of Enduro. I have yet to try my hand at Enduro but it is at the top of my list of things to do.

Would still be nice to have a progressive jumpline like OM is building!

Not pathetic at all! I chatted to Nige pre WC about doing some development stuff at the KZN Development Centre but he was busy with the WC track. Now that it is finished, we need to carry on that conversation.

My 20cents

We need to develop Downhill riders. If Cyclingsa had direction, they should identify young females racing Bmx. Never mind Rika and Gina. Lets start with Gina's daughter. She races Bmx. There is Georgie Gracie, this little girl is amazing. She and a few more youngster who race Bmx have the skill to develop into top class Downhill racers.

A few guys mentioned the second hand bikes our guys rode at World Champs. Downhill racing is not cheap, but Bmx racing is cheaper. So start your development with Bmx. The Aussie and many European cycling unions spend large some of money on their talent identification. Caroline Buchanan and Peter Sagan both come from a Bmx background. Buchanan rode World Bmx Champs, World Mtb Downhill and 4 Cross Worlds all in the same year.

It's very difficult to get sponsor to sponsor a Bmx or Downhill Team. The sport is so quick, sponsors logo's become a flash. Downhill racing is much the same. The biggest logo's one sees is the kit manufacturer, the money sponsors get very little exposure.

I remember Burry racing Downhill as a laaitie. You earn skill. We need to develop XCO and Downhillers.

And don't wind dress.....

Wow guys and girls. Take a chill. Please excuse the spellibg as im doing this off my phone having a beer at barneys in PE.

Ok so ...

1. Anka and joanna have raced on the world circuit. Although doing ok. Thas where it ended.

2. Sponsorship. Dh internationally and In sa suffers due to numbers. Lack of numbers = lack of funding. In sa this is very obvious where I have tried toget lots of funding for dh in kzn and its like trying to get blood from a stone. But xc gets loads because of the participation numbers.

Then it comes to numbers of lady riders. At a world cup the TOTAL NUMBER - (Carpet ... please read this as ur comments about the worlds masters were so doff it made me cringe - but I'll explain that just now) ... of LADIES is about 40. Of which top 20 qualify for finals. So this is in comparison to 200 odd men going for top 80. So worldwide there iisa shortage of women downhillers. Maybe its due to the tech nature. But I just think that like most sport the chicks are always in the minority

So in sa its not surprising we dont have many lady dh riders. The crop that we do have however is kickass where most of the chicks will ride 70% of the okes on here into oblivion. So I think they deserve a heck lloadof credit.

Ok so ttothe worlds here in sa and carpets comments.

1. Firstly I agree with u. 10 riders harldy seems a sufficient number of ridera to constitute a world champs.

BUT .... when only 20 chicks qualify in the world cup and there are only a total of 40 odd who enter from the entire world .... 10 masters ladies doesnt seem to bad. So before u bithfit about the lack of riders here at our worlds ... think of the lack of riders internationally.

Peace out.

Nige I was not referring to downhill I was actually referring to the womens XCO

Below is the split of riders that actually raced on the day.

Now for me personally looking at the figures ....

Now this is my opinion

You cannot call this a world champs.

Actually you can. If you have an open invitation to the WORLD that allows ANYBODY that meets the criteria (and there were only two. You had to be the right age group and not have earned any UCI points in that year) to come and race and that invitation is open and advertised for months prior to the event, then that is a world champs. If nobody decides to make the effort to come and race.... that's too bad. It's still a world champs!

HOW did I miss this thread

Ok...I know nothing about ladies DH, so i will let those in the know comment on that, but there have been a couple of posts related to womens xc that I would like to put forward my opinion on AND a question about males DH

Upcoming womens xc contenders:

Bianca Haw - but she needs to choose between mtb and canoeing

Beanie Thies - still a while as she is only 11 yrs old but already showing great potential with an incredible attitude. If she is guided correctly she could definitely be a world beater - currently part of the jeep team (which i dont know is a good thing)

Now...without hijacking the womens dh title. my question to the dh guys is what is happening on the male side?? pottie and needles are there but not at the level of greg...so what youngsters if any are up and coming?

Then onto BMX:

On the bmx side I know Paul Wood down here in KZN is working hard to keep the bmx scene alive, whats happening in the cape or gauteng?

yeah dude. Look I agree that the ratio is bias and that the numbers werent there if u compare to any local event. Or the world cups on that matter. But again what needs to be kept in mind is that masters worlds is not the same as elite worlds. You dont need to be selected. Ucan just rock up if u over 30. But still its those who have the balls to give it a go who are there and thats often a select field. So thas worthy of a champs. Its definitely no normal xc or dh race I can tell u that. The pressure is way higher.

HOW did I miss this thread

Blah blah blah ..... xc ... xc .... xc. Xc .... oh and bmx.

Hahahahhahaha

Guys this is a downhill thread. Stop turning our poor downtrodden discipline into xc all the time. Hahahah.

No to be fair we need more xc and dh ladies. But def more dh. Xc gets enough of the pie already. And it would be nice to have some hot chicks (other than my wife) racing dh.

When it comes to world champs what needs to be remembered too is that people like greg are special. They are a rare breed. In dh there have been less than 10 world champions by my quick count in 23 years or so of competition. I think the same will be true for xc. So we cant all just expect another greg or burry. So we need to try and prep new riders but cant expect them to be top of the pops straight away.

oi..nige did you not read I was answering what had been said about xc earlier in the thread - thats all

But that is exactly what I was asking in my post above that you blah blah'd..so what young talent is there? if any? I am not asking for another greg, but the more we have racing the world cup circuit, the more attention the discipline will get..and also why I asked about grass roots bmx development.

I think you just saw the xc bit and ignored my other questions
