New to road riding

Recommended Posts

Did my 1st ride... Shirt one just to feel..

Still very unstable... And struggling with changing gears and braking. Feels as if brakes are almost out of reach?

Road bike can feel very different when moving across from a MTB.

Assuming correct size and fit, comfort will improve with time in the saddle.

Try and get in some rides before events too ... riding the bunches well requires a certain level of confidence.

Spoke to a colleague who is a roady and he mentioned som obvious facts why i feel unstable now.

Bars are much much narrower

Wheels are rock hard with no shock

You sit in a mush more up and forward position

I am positive i waited to long, should have started training on the road bike at least a month back.

I'm sure you will be fine, just get enough training in between now and then. Everyone seems to be scaring the crap out of you. Take it easy, enjoy the ride and most importantly have fun.

I assume you bought the bike second hand and as such no attempt has been made to fit the bike to your body.

Go to a bike shop and ask them whether they will assist with a fitting, ( expect to pay for the service). Or, much better, book and go to cyclefit in northcliff ( or other specialist fitment centre) and have them sort you out.

You may not believe it, but it will make ALL the difference.

Nope, new and was fitted by linden.

But a proper fit will need to be done

go and ask them to adjust the reach on the brake levers and to ensure the levers are appropriately positioned for you.

If you feel the need, join one of the many clubs in Joburg for a weekend ride, such as Club100, CycleLab, Complete Cyclist to get a feel for bunch riding. And then feel free to pick the guys (and girls) brains, there is a lot of accumulated knowledge. Plus a lot also do both road and MTB and canhelp you with the transition.

I am also going to be riding it on a road bike for the 1st time. Only getting the bike this week so will have min time to prepare and get used to it. What i will do is do a few laps round Kyalami next week to get the feel of things, and then keep to the outside of the madness come the 07h15 start next Sunday.
