Making your own Indoor Rollers or Trainer Stands

Recommended Posts

So, I'm looking at making my own Indoor rollers or trainer stand, and was just wondering if any others have done the same thing? I have access to a lot of wood, ali and plastic so materials are not an issue.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Which is a better to use the rollers or trainer? I've had a look at a few ideas and they seem very, simple and easy enough too make.

Here are a few ideas that I have found on the great interweb.

The designing of it this weekend should keep me occupied

You should ride your bike instead... plenty of good cheap second hand ones out there... I doubt you could build one for less than you could buy one and make it as reliable as a purchased one.

But it is your time... :)

I can build it for virtually nothing, as mentioned I have more scrap material then I know what to do with. One of the chaps who works for me, his dad(Jonkie) built one and it was really easy. I just need to know which is better to use, the rollers or the stands. I have one opinion and that is to go the rollers route.

Build a roller that simulates uphill properly, i.e. the front can be raised and the rear wheel still has resistance.

Yes I know you can add a brick or something simple under the front, but we are talking about building something....Maybe you could patent it and make a fortune

Please upload the pics of your creation, should be an interesting build (for me i which i could sit a "trap" on the same spot but for some reason its the most boring ride in the world) but its great for weather situations and zone training etc.

If you are working without a power meter and doing fairly steady state training - then the rollers are good - if you want to do short hard intervals with a power meter, then the stands are better -less chance of falling off while you are looking at your computer/stem trying to hit the target power numbers...

If you are building them - build both... :)

Thanks for the feedback, will look into that as well. Are you thinking along the lines of manually changing or something more along the lines of a running treadmill?

That's the main reason behind this, I don't do zone training :w00t: , its all about the fun element for me.

Well if it worked like you can change the incline on a treadmill that would be the ultimate i.e. while you riding. But I guess that would start getting complicated (electric motor required etc...) so I guess something that you would manually change... kind of like you can change the seat height on some spinning bikes (peg n hole) would be more simple.

In the case of rollers you might have other challenges like trying to stop the bike rolling off the back if the front is to high....

I can just picture the youtube clip now, lol. I'm sure its possible up to a certain incline

I built one years ago, took ages (lots of lathe time, and even more grinding and welding.

Fancy bearings, etc.

Got the bike onto it and after a few minutes I looked outside and thought "what the hell am I doing inside"

It helps that I live in a small dorp and can ride pretty much when and where I want to.

The trainer? It got cut up and used for other projects.
