Yip Vaal is fishin good at the moment, i fished Arens Nes on Sunday got a few fish as well, lost plenty as the hooks opened, need to learn to tie some of my own flies on decent hooks.

Nice to see the upcountry lads having fun. Here in DA Colony the streams are a tepid trickle and the trout refuse to play ball.  I've given them a break since early January. That finally gave me a little t.i.t.s. for the upcoming Argus. There's just no way I can lose!

T.I.T.S Time in the stream?

  Indeed, with autumn  around the corner, and after the first winter rains, our streams should perk up quickly!

I have been writhing in agony as I see photo after photo of very big Smallmouth Yellowfish being caught in the Vaal lately. It seems to have been a brilliant season, with a lot of fish over 2.5kg being caught. I just haven't been able to make a gap to get out there. What a Tjop...  All I have managed this Summer so far is some reasonable Bass from Emmawrenchya on conventional tackle and some little rats on the 5wt...

Yes, on Sunday. We got a few fish.

Nice...good venue that...

PS, I don't normally share my spots, but if you go around the corner there on the right of you photo there is a small set of rapids....FISH IT, lots of gold there...no muddies.

Then on the total opposite side of the vaal bank where you fishing(not the islands in between) there is also good fish that don't see flies alot. Suspect its because of the extensive wading required...but totally worth it. Micro nymph under thing-a-ma-bob floater(tippet to fly of about 15cm) and drift through the eddies and next to the bank...BOOOM. Oh and chuck line out before drift is totally done...they almost always take on  swing...nice baetis hatching imitation and behavior of hatching

I always prefered bass fishing as i like been able to walk around the dam and cast and not have to sit and wait for the carp or catfish to take the bait, it feels like more of a challenge.

2 years ago my mate introduced me to fly fishing, incorrectly cause he is a lefty and i am actually a righty, however I am seriously keen on taking it up as a once a month relaxation as fishing with a bass rod just doesn`t excite me anymore.

So any info regarding gettting started?, Basic equipment first and lures?, I want to get into it and then progress.

Where do you fly fish in Gauteng and what are the seasons like?

Nice, flyfishing is ubber relaxing...lots of nature and taking in sights, sounds and smells. Even a crap day ito fish is a good day on the water of you know what i mean

Ok on to your question....equipment wise, you really dont need the best of the best to start. Technique and knowledge is far more important than the latest sage rod.

In gauteng you can hit some stockie trout ponds all around the cradle are. But know this, stockie bashing will loose its flavour very quickly. You will then turn to yellowfish on the vaal. Below the barage(on the barage road) there are lots of venues....geelvis paradys, silwerstrome, arendsnes, eendekuil....all the way to parys(elgro river lodge). The nice thing about fishing for yellows is that you actually have to understand your quarry, at first they seem ubber hard to catch, because you are probably using troot tactics and beautifull river runs through it casts...yellows laugh at this. You need to do a bit of homework on the topic and if you can get someone with knowledge to show you the ropes.

As for kit...5 weight, 9,5 - 10 ft, floating line(get the best you can afford), roll of maxima green to tie leaders and a roll of 3x tippet should be ok for now. Don't spend big money on a reel, they just hold line...

Good advice on all round starters kit!

A 5 weight is the most versatile of all.  It will be perfect for stilwater trout and river yellows but will also do most trout streams and bass wherever you find them. It could even be pushed into saltwater estuaries for small garric & mullet. There is no better place to start.
