Another Red Robot complaint

This is an excerpt from the letter page of the Sandton Chronicle our local Newspaper:

Cyclists behave badly<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

"Andy" writes:
As I fellow cyclist and a motorist, I would like to raise what I consider a major issue for the cycling as well as the motoring communities.
Having been involved in cycling for the past 35 years, as an active competitor and serving on my previous club's committee, I need to raise the issue of red traffic lights. There is a large group of cyclists that persist in ignoring traffic control. The group cycles down Sandton Drive  at approximately 6am weekday mornings and ignores red lights while crossing Grayston Drive and Marie Road intersections.
I'm sure these are not the only intersections where this transgression occurs. There was a near miss with a car at the Marie Road intersection the other day, and there will shortly be a case where the cyclists will be driven into or knocked down, with the motorist being the innocent party, but in all likelihood, be given the blame by these cyclists.
Is it not time the bodies in control of these cyclists are taken to task before the already strained relationship between cyclists and motorists is worsened?

A spokesman for Central Gauteng Cycling comments:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
To the guilty parties, please be advised that we have forwarded this correspondence to the Metro police and asked that they fine those cyclists who do not abide by the rules of the road.
We cannot blame motorists for a bad attitude when we completely ignore basic safety rules. It is a pity that a few culprits are ruining the reputation of the broad cycling community.

Shoo... luckily it's no me. I only do that at 4am when it's safe to do so after I checked, ask Mampara.

Question: How will the metro police fine these cyclists?

I suppose it's only a matter of time before they wait at these intersections and catch the guys doing it. How they will prove their identities? I don't know if they would be able to arrest you or confiscate bikes?

I am on that route early in the morning in my car... and see it happen all the time... Its only a matter of time before someone gets knocked... so better cyclists on that route wise up and realise that they are not made of steel,Carbon Fibre or any other such material... and a moving car could cause a fair bit of damage to their beautiful bikes... and most likely some time in ICU for them...

Theres actually nothing to argue about, the guys are in the wrong and are breaking the law. If they get caught they cannot complain (actually should read if "we get caught" cos I am just as guily as the rest).

I just don't know, as Jason pointed out, how would they issue fines or whatever?

Well I would think that the cops could arrest you... But this means that all Metro Police cars will need to be fitted with bike racks... Expect another intrest rate hike soon Stern%20Smile

Are these 'adults' we are talking about who should know better? If so they know the risks and are obviously prepared to take them .......

I hope for their sakes their luck holds out (and mine!) and as IanJ says I also take a chance here or there but if something happened (and it was my fault) I would have to live with it!
