World Championship

1. Jaroslav Kulhavy (Cze) 4:15:58

17. James Reid (RSA) 4:34:09 +18:10

Time difference 18:10

SA Championship race time

James Reid 4:41:21

Kevin Evans 4:48:38

Time difference ~30 minutes slower than Kulhavy

He is clearly referring to the difference between the SA Championship and the World Championship in general.

You would need an enormous amount of baggage to read it as an attack on James.

That is the way I read it...referring to his own time at SA's and the winning time in both. Nothing to do with JR

It will be a bit retarded of him to have a stab at JR considering where he placed

The first time I saw the tweet I thought he was having a dig at James, but after looking at the facts I think he was referring to the event rather than the SA Champ...

I'm sure no dig was intended at James Reid, just an honest observation about the different level the 'Euro' riders compete at compared to the Saffers.

I'm very disappointed at our marathon guys' performance. For two XCO specialists to be the first two Saffers across the line when we are a country that specialises in XCM racing, means that our marathon guys really need to up their game. Maybe they're happy competing on the SA stage only and don't really care about where they rate globally?

Either way I think any youngster thinking of making a career in MTB should focus on XCO not marathon. Their training and fitness clearly allows them to compete successfully in XCM while at the same time allowing them to compete and make a real name for themselves on the global stage.

Most of the XCM powerhouses are very good XCO riders as well.

Last year Alban Lakata decided to ride the UCI XCO world cup at Nove Mesto as a training ride in preparation for marathon worlds. He came 28th overall, winning Phillip Buys (who had a good race) by 4 minutes.

In my opinion a marathon rider should be good at both disciplines.

But those Europeans definitely operate at a whole different level.

it was not a dig..he left out a critical plural "s" it should have read SA Champs

and that 10 minutes that reid gained was probably the ten minutes he lost stuffing around with his chain

it is mainly the stewart pairing that make stupid off the cuff tweets...I dont think KE is like that

If you want to beat the best, you have to compete against the best on a regular basis..stage races not the same as a marathon race.. also why I think Ariane didn't do as well as maybe expected..she was 20min down on Anika.

I reckon XCO is very good for them to maybe develop more power to be able to make that break and make it work.. donno. . Just thinking out loud.

Make no mistake.. these guys and gals are really all very good.. better than what I could ever hope to be..

Thought Reid's result was really good along with Robyn and Jeanine those 2 ladies have full time Jobs if I am not mistaken? Huge respect to them.

It's easy to criticise from the outside.. but the competition is really tough.

A lot of hard work and sacrifice goes into it.

Whether it is pathetic or a dig or not, quite cool that the SA champ managed to stay in front of the SA contenders and that nothing can be said about him winning SA Champs and the under perform at worlds. James Reid needs some serious backing.

James is a fantastic athlete as well as rourke, sadly cycling will always play second fiddle to sports like rugby and cricket. opportunities for young upcoming riders are few and far between.

Nice to have you back on The Hub Max.

What is your plans for next year? I see you are launching your own racing team?

Either way it doesn't look like Max Knox's career focus switch from marathon=>XC=>marathon has worked out this year.

i will always ride xc its a fantastic discipline that i thoroughly love. If your a bike rider you should be good in all terrain. yes that was my intended focus last year however, after two months my contract was cancelled. leaving me either with two choices either quite cycling and apply for a job as inexperienced unqualified young male in south africa, or put my hand in my hat and join fed group who had enough budget to support me. i will still race cross country when ever i can and am free however, i have a fair amount of bills to pay monthly and solely focusing on xc is not going to pay those bill sadly. however, our country blessed with some amazing young talent iand i would love to see them racing more and more overseas..
