RuanJvR89 Posted November 22, 2013 Share Good day. I started cycling 4 months ago to join our company in the 94.7 cycle challenge. I borrowed someones road bike to use on the day. I enjoyed it so much and I'm considering buying a MTB to continue cycling. What would be a good MTB to start with? Something that is good but not so expensive. I'm new to this and appreciate your assistance. Kind Regards
Hennie VR Posted November 22, 2013 Share Welcome to TheHub. Tell us what is your idea of "not so expensive". If we know what your budget is we can start to suggest some options.
RuanJvR89 Posted November 22, 2013 Share Well between +/- R5000. It is only to start with.
DACoetzee Posted November 22, 2013 Share Do you see it as a way of getting fit and having fun, or trying to place well within your category?
RuanJvR89 Posted November 22, 2013 Share Just for fun now and maybe a few races. I will spend more later when I get more into it.
DACoetzee Posted November 22, 2013 Share Have a look at the Classifieds section, they have some great specials from time to time. Other than that, you can have a look at something like:1. Momsen AL029 R 57002. Gaint Revel 33. GT Karakoram4. GT Avalanche 3.05. Merida Matts TFS 100 All these bikes are between R 5 000 and R 7 000 depending on where you buy, and IMO great for starters. I started a few months back with a Momsen AL229 and its great! In the beginning you fall a lot as you learn to ride steep off road hills with cleats, so you don't want to mess up nice parts/frames. RuanJvR89 Posted November 22, 2013 Share Thank you DACoetzee! I will have a look at this and follow with some feedback.
kosmonooit Posted November 22, 2013 Share Also consider 2nd hand, bikes loose about 1/2 their value within a few months, so some bargains to be had here.
Super Sywurm Posted November 22, 2013 Share You can't go wrong with a Merida, I sold my Merida and I am crying myself asleep every night (I want it back)!!! DACoetzee
DACoetzee Posted November 22, 2013 Share Have a look at Chris Willemse Cycles, they ship anywhere in RSA and shipping is free for orders above R 1000.00 Just make sure that you have the correct size, then you can just order and it will arrive in 2-3days. http://www.cwcycles.co.za/
