Hi Hollowman,

Now been able to see the cross section of the helmet, the plastic is super thin and I at first also thought maybe the helmet was inadequate and I should be ranting how crap it is but then I doubt they test and design the helmets for sharp objects.

My replacement helmet will certainly be a top of the range one though as I now have first hand experience as to how critical they are.

I'm inclined to agree that most bicycle helmets are probably not tested for resistance to piercing/tearing/sharp objects. They're full of ventilation holes as well, which increases the chances of being poked by something if one dismounts in a hurry. I must admit that I never even considered the possibility of a collision like this; it is a real eye opener. At least in your case the force got tamed enough to not split your skull open(coupled with a lucky shallow angle of entry)and do serious damage; I suppose that helmet did it's job as best it could and died in the process.

Maybe time for Full face DH helmet after all, as suggested earlier...

Do some reading re helmets and safety before buying one. Tests have shown that there is very little difference between cheap and expensive helmets in terms of outright protection. You are paying for a name and in some cases a better fit and finish.

Cycling helmets are a compromise - the inlet/vent holes weaken them and allow sharp objects to penetrate more easily and yet air vents are used as a selling point! If you want a warm but maximum protection open face helmet get an Urge Enduromatic. Mine was doing great work until it was stolen last weekend :-(
