I remember Rynhardt jv Rensburg saying, if you want to win races in SA you need to have an FTP of 330. (also depending on weight).

Hopefully my base miles will raise my FTP, keeping it high z2 and z3 for most rides over the holz.

Base mile training will do nothing for your FTP - unless you are out of shape.... add something hard in from time to time... short hill repeats.... z7+....

20 sec z7, 10 sec rest.... repeat 8 - 10 times.... till you can't hold z7.... ride 20 min, repeat.... don't fall off... twice a week should do it. :)

AND don't try and do this while calculating times in your head... learn how to use your workouts on the Garmin - and set targets...

Personally I sometimes use lamp poles on a hill for something similar - 1 on, 1 off... (or 2 on, 1 off) think there are 30 odd lamp poles on that hill - or thereabouts.. averages 6%. fortunately the bike I use for that does not have a power meter, because it would show me exactly how k..k I am .... :)

So I did my 20min TT tonight.

Avg Power: 310W * 0.95 = 294.5W FTP @187bpm

Max (because I was curious): 1175W = 19.26 W/kg (+-5 seconds)

So am I correct in saying that my FTP is 294W? I'm 61kg, which gives me a power/weight ratio of 4.82 W/kg.

The 310W is the average that my Garmin gave me on the 20min interval.

Here is a link to the file https://www.dropbox....y_412557182.tcx as I'm not yet sure how to analyse.

One thing I did notice is that the file size is substantially larger than usual! 5MB vs 400KB. I suppose changing the recording method to "every second" is one of the culprits here.

that is good stats there mate. well done. Jip 294 FTP very good for a 61kg lad.

Buy training and racing with a power meter and read it thoroughly.

Good numbers!

Did you follow Hunters protocol exactly for the 20 min test? can you pm me a link to that file in training peaks, or Garmin connect please.

What you will find is that you will see an improvement in your numbers the first few times you do the test - this is more just better pacing selection as you get more experienced with doing the protocol - takes 3 or 4 repeats to get the best numbers - give it a day or 2 and repeat it - it's a good workout anyway :)

last night i calibrated my PT, torque readings went to 0.09, so i redid it and came back to 0.00, would the 0.09 been acceptable? what is the margin for error in this circumstance? does this mean that my unit is due for a service by any chance?

Just upgrade your software on your head unit, and in the wheel.

The only reason to send it in is if the calibration is not within 12 of 512 - AND repeated manual zeroing of the wheel does not bring it into spec again - there is a menu option on the garmin head unit to do that.

Resurrecting an old topic here, but need some assistance with my Powertap and Garmin.

I have a Powertap G3 disc hub paired to a Garmin Edge 520. I'm not convinced that the power readings it is giving me are consistent.

I try and remember to do a manual offset / calibration through the Garmin on a weekly basis, but I often forget

I read somewhere previously that one can set the Powertap to "Auto Zero" through your Garmin, but I haven't been able to find that article again and I haven't found much when searching with Google. Does anyone know how to set this up? Or is it automatically a feature with the new Garmins?

Hi

I have the exact same powermeter and Garmin

My Garmin gives me the option of calibrating before every ride..

But don’t really do it..

Why do you think your readings are not consistent?

i also have the exact same devices. If you go into the powermeter sensor on your Garmin all the settings should be there, alternatively download the PowerTap mobile phone app & try calibration via that. I forget the exact numbers now but if you calibrate befor every ride the calibration numbers should fall within a specific range ie. -5 to +5 anything outside of this & you need to ship it to the guys at bicycle power. You can actually just phone them & they tell you what it should be that’s if they have not responded here by the morning.

Another test I like to do is soft pedal or no pedal & see what the power reading displays. If it displays a number for zero to no effort it probably needs to go in for a service re-calibration.
