Whats the average cost on tires for the fat bikes and are tires already easily available in SA?

I'm running the Knard 29"x3" and the wire bead versions are R950 each. Folding bead versions are R1100ish

Thanks Flippa, and I guess you are running them tubeless? Sorry, should have asked that in first post allready!!

Yip. The tyres are not tubeless, not TLR, not UST, etc. The front is converted with a Surly rim strip and Gorilla tape, the rear with a Surly rim strip and a 26" split tube. Both hold air pretty well, riding just under 1 bar in the rear and about 0.7 bar in front.

I am looking forward to the Maxxis Chronicle becoming available. That's a tubeless ready bead with their EXO sidewall. Only launching in December unfortunately.

Frohan, note these are 29x3" - 29+ tyres, not 26" fat bike tyres.

26x3.0 - 4.0" aren't easy to find but Surly tyres (Bud's or Lou's) can be found. Around R1500 - R2000 each.

I have a connection for Vee Rubber 4.0" tyres in Europe. Works out cheaper.

Thx, I didn't see that, was hoping it was 26 x 4.0.

Just doing a bit of homework first, are really tempt for a Fatbike for those easy recovery rides in between the hard sessions.

Chaps at Specialized will be selling 26 x 4.6, not sure when or at what price. Great tyres with huge grip. Oh, there is no easy ride on a fatbike. When you ride it you will want to push it and it hurts! Rode Giba yesterday, had a blast on it but legs & body tired.

I had a blast on mine at Giba. Didn't want to push at all? Could feel I had had a good ride, but no different to if I had ridden the PYGA. The is usually a bit of hurt session on the SIR9 with one gear, but the Fatty is surprising me on the trails. It's really not as tough as anticipated. I think I've got the tyre pressures just right. You can feel the heavier rolling mass (most of the extra weight is in the wheels/ tyres), make no mistake - so the hills are a little harder but the downhills are awesome!!! I have some light weight fatbike tubes on the way which will be replacing the stock heavy ones - then I'll be going tubeless. The initial weight drop by changing tubes is about 800g - I don't anticipate going tubeless to drop too much more weight. It will just provide my prefered tyre setup. I think the weight drop in the tubes will be noticable. They are properly fun bikes to ride  .

Thx for the feedback!!

I'm making a list of cheapy Fatty's that I know that's available in SA now, please add to my list....decision time....Thx!!

This will be a once in a week play bike, so I don't care to much about components, as long as the frame and fork last!

Ok, so compared to the On One Fatty, my Krampus is only chubby but my general riding experience is very similar. Its a bit harder to get up the hills and to get it rolling, but the downhills are awesome. I find myself braking much later for corners and trusting the extra traction to get me through. I also find it a lot easier to hop and jump obstacles than my other 29ers
