cutting a carbon flat bar

My bad on the pipe cutter idea. Tx for schooling me guys.

That plumbers pipe cutter is really for soft metals like copper, which is much softer that Al, and the Al use in bars is high strength alloy. Might work but not the right tool for the job. Def. wouldn't try it with Scandium, that stuff is really hard!

What I find good for cutting metals (and would probably work well for carbon) is the very thin (lie 1 mm) cutting discs you get for the smaller type of angle grinder (4 1/2"?), that really slices through anything very neatly. You will need to clamp the bars firmly, and wear eye protection etc

lol thanks 2Nutz, but i currently have a 600 so used to that size

Believe me, he's right! I went through the same thing (used to have 600-635), and now I'll never go near as narrow as 600mm, these days 660 - 680 is where i'm comfortable, and lots of people go much wider... 700 plus

You can always cut the bars, but never add to them! Just give it a few rides to test...

Assuming of course that they're not 1000mm long! You didn't mention the length...

Yes, give the wider bars a go, one gets used to them quickly and then riding a road bike with them narrow bars feels just wrong!

Another challenge for cutting bars is cutting them square, and you do get guides for hacksaws. Otherwise, practice! And dress, de-burr with a suitable fine metal file.

Or you could just take your hack saw with the steel cutting blade.... I did mine like that and going slow ... no splinters, nothing - cleen cut.

I bought a bar and it came 680mm long, after riding 580mm bar for a number of years. I figured I'd give it a try for a bit, and a year later I'm thinking I need to go wider. Definitely worth giving the wider bar a go first, before cutting. You might be surprised.
