I will use Harkerville Red as an example, I cycled there this holiday and was wondering what the general opinion is on what type of bike is ideal for this specific trail. I would like to get an idea of the general opinion on this and compare it to the bikes I saw on the trail.

100mm dual suspension for me. Racing Ralph type tire should do the trick, but will be a snot if it's wet so maybe something a bit more grippy.

  • Have ridden a hardtail there and the roots got quite rough with me.
  • Nothing big, steep or technical enough to justify a longer travel dual (but - as with any trail - any bike bar a DH / FR bie can ride there and still have lots of fun)

As The Crow says it can be done on any bike.

100-120mm is probably the best. Have done it on a fully rigid singlespeed and lately on my 160mm Enduro bike.

120mm trailbike is precisely designed for a trail like that. It is comfortable, stable, pedals well, climb well and will be forgiving enough for the odd rough bit.

80 - 100mm XC race type bike will do it faster, and almost as comfortably. If that is what you have, just do it.

140mm all-mountain bike will do it a bit slower but you'll still have heaps of fun. If it is what you ride, just do it.

160mm enduro bike will be overkill, but hey, I know a guy that rides the Argus on a downhill rig. Just do it.
