looking to get some new tyre in the near future - do I now go tubeless?

 

new UST rims + UST tyres?

 

stans + UST tyres?

 

stans + normal tyres?

For what it's worth:-

 

1) Joe's a bit cheaper than Stan's but I (IMHO!!!!) find the Joe's strips a bit 'lighter' in the pants than the Stan's ones. Having said that I still use the Joe's strips ......

 

2) Joe's/Stan's 'latex' stuff pretty much the same in my experience but again the Joe's a bit cheaper.

 

3) I prefer using UST tyres cause the sidewalls are stronger but then again it means they are heavier

 

Also a good idea to take along one of these new fangled snot rag tubeless repair kits although it has been proven here on the HUB that the nearest elastic band goodie from a ladies poney tail will do just as good a job! I think the thin material covered ones would work best Wink

Hey Chilli, tell them how long it took you and IanJ to try and inflate a tubeless wheel that did not want to seal. Took half a minute with a tube.

mampara - I've been a fir beleive with tubes.........as I have seen guys walk home with airless...I mean tubeless wheels.

 

I have heard great things about tubeless, a lot I reackon to be true - but as long nothing goes wrong they seem to be the dogs but soon as you have a little problem, you seem to have a major problem!

If you do the conversion properly then you will not have problems ! From all the mails and posts I have read it is very clear that half the people don't know how to do this job ! If you do it right you can even make your wheelbarrow tubeless !!!

last weekend I was riding with a couple of big shot cyclists in Jonkershoek. First  puncture (yes, i ride with tubes) after about 10 minutes I punctured and the epic training crowd kindly waited, the one girl yelling at me to go tubeless though. New tube in, ready to go again - another puncture. That's when they left me LOL

one stayed behin with me and told me that with my usage of tubes I pribably pay more than for tubeless. So I'm going tubeless now - at least on the nasty backwheel! Hearing what the people say it's supposed to be magic - I like magic and will try it out!

We running 3 bikes with Joe's and 2 spare sets of wheels. Have used anything from non-tubeless Larsen TT's, Crossmark's and also LUST Crossmark's, Kenda Karma's, Bee-stings and 2Bliss Captains. Do all our own conversions in the last 2 years after our LBS did the first 2 sets and no issues.

 

Had a few small issues right at the beginning but I would not go back to tubes ........... sidewall cuts can be a swine!

tubeless is thicker, so "less" chance of ripping, but if you're normal tyre is beefy enough, you're okay.

Legend, I had no problems with 'normal' tyres other than the sidewalls 'seemed' to be more susceptible to sidewall cuts. Since my weight problems are not the bike or it's components I decided to go with the heavier tubeless versions and reduce the sidewall risk!

 

My laaitie reckons those Specialized captain controls are the dogs whatsisnames, they are 2Bliss and not as expensive as some of the other UST/LUST/BUST tyres. I haven't tried them so can't comment though.

Hey, that trick got me my 17 seconds of fame in bicycling and certainly scored some browny points with the nubile young female that donated said hair elastic Wink

 

rock....all I'm going to say wrt your use of tubes is this....remember Montagu '07...?

 

You guys would've had no issues at that race had you been running tubeless!
