Couple of us from the cape planning to come up for the 600 on 21st March. Wondering what you guys do in terms of booking rooms at the Lido - do they need a booking for 2 nights, or just the 1 night on the return leg part way through. Also how long in advance you need to book etc.

My riding buddy is quite a bit quicker than me - so we're both assuming we probably won't end up riding all of it together.. He'll be in a +/-25kmh category and I'm a nice steady 20kmh plodder, although quicker when terrain and wind allows. We'll probably both be keen to buddy up with riders of similar speed, esp for the night sections.

I realise it's some weeks off yet, but time has a habit of disappearing so I like to get my plans straight early.

Edit: I should add that Grant was also sounding like he may come up for the ride too when we were out MTB last weekend.

Awesome that you might be joining us in March. This is a pre-entry for PBP.

Most of us usually book a room for two nights. We sleep at the Lido on the Friday night, before the early start on Saturday. There can be party noise on Fiday nights, which can be an issue.

We've never had issues with bookings, but I'd book early, as there will be more riders than usual because of PBP.

Great that Grant may be joining us too!

We just finished the 400 at 25 km/h. I plan to ride slower for the 600, so you could fit in with us if you wish.

Sounds great, thanks for the advice. After the wooden floors of LEL, party noise should be a breeze - must remember to pack the earplugs.

Yep - myself, Henri and Grant are all looking towards PBP with this in mind as a pre-entry ride. Just hoping my neck holds out for this one!

Edit - oh, and thanks for the offer, be great to ride with a few of you guys, even if only for part of the way. I know long rides are all about your own sustainable pace, so you can never really plan a whole ride together.

Spoke to Grant today, and he is keen for the 600. Seems like his mind is made up! Which leaves me obliged to join too!! The entry form states a 21st of March start, but you say it starts on Sat morning only?

Speedracer can you confirm?

The Friday is a public holiday - so I'm hoping it is Fri 3am, gives us some of the weekend after the ride

My mistake. The 600 starts on Friday 21st March at 0300. This is a public holiday. This should make the cut-off at 1900 on Saturday.

Can we negotiate the start time? 05:00 seems better than 03:00.

This race sounds more do-able than a 400.

Start the 1 day at 05:00 and finished the 1st 350 km at sunset. Sleep, start the next moring at 05:00 again and cover the last 250 km by 21h00.

Or will there be some control point cut-off time which is going to be nastly enough to ruin my careful plan?

Corrected that for you ... ;)

I was told quite firmly when I started in audax, you don't race you ride. Also no mention should be made of words from other less enlightened forms of our pastime - such as "training" (in audax you prepare, you don't train) ....

As far as I know, the control point cut-off times are all less than 30km/h, greater than 15km/h. I don't know if the 600 is any different.

Spot on, but I am too lazy to do the calc to see I can afford a sleep in at the control pt at the ± 420 km mark. At 15 kph this might mean that CP will close at say 06h00, which makes a sleep in impossible.

600km at 15km/h = 40 hours

Start at 03h00 on Fri and finish at 21h00 on Sat = 42 hours.

That means 2 hours sleep.

Err .... no .... for a 600 audax you get 40 hours, full stop. If you want 2 hours sleep it comes out of that 40 hours.

FWIW - I'm working around probably a 2.5 to 3 hr midway sleep break. I find anything more than that is surplus, and much less than that I'm still in deep sleep. I find a "short nap" stop of 40 mins is the next best thing if I don't have time for a full 2hrs +

Is it not worth it to push in order to gain a couple of hours sleep?

So on the 600km there are not controls that open or close? As far as i can remember we had control open and close times when we did the 600km as qualifier for PBP.
