Is it not worth it to push in order to gain a couple of hours sleep?

It doesn't really work that way. The time limits are set by the audax society in Paris (BRM). If you don't complete the ride within that time (plus all the intermediate control points) it won't be accepted as a completed BRM ride, in which case then it won't also work as a pre-qualifier for PBP, which is a main factor for a few of us travelling up to ride it.

Edit: that and to get to enjoy riding with the Jozy audax folks of course too ;)

So on the 600km there are not controls that open or close? As far as i can remember we had control open and close times when we did the 600km as qualifier for PBP.

Heya - you think of travelling up for it Ems? Henri and I are both heading up, as is Grant who I'm not sure you've met yet.

FWIW - I'm sure the controls will have open and close times just like the 600s here. That's part of the overall rules I believe for it being a proper BRM ride.

I am thinking about it, but it is clashes with the warm water weekend in Langebaan.

Can we negotiate the start time? 05:00 seems better than 03:00.

This race sounds more do-able than a 400.

Start the 1 day at 05:00 and finished the 1st 350 km at sunset. Sleep, start the next moring at 05:00 again and cover the last 250 km by 21h00.

Or will there be some control point cut-off time which is going to be nastly enough to ruin my careful plan?

I think we should not move the advertised time . We had a situation on the 400 last month, where one of our compatriots decided he'd do a line entry at 3am. Yes, I know. We didn't know he was riding and left at. 2am . He was displeased.

If you're keen on PBP some night riding prep is probably not a bad idea. Start at 3am, knock off 350-400km by 1900-2100-ish. Sleep and eat. Power through what 's left of the night . Finish in daylight with lots of time to spare, in case of problems.

100%!

I'm most worried about having a comfy bed to sleep in in the middle. The one good thing about hard floors and noisy rooms on LEL was there was no incentive temptation to hang around dozing when you should have been riding!

Cool. Keep us posted - be great if you do. Maybe we can ride the first control together again - after that I know I'll be battling to keep up your pace!

What I meant is that by increasing your ave speed say from 15km/h to 17km/h one will "gain" 2 hours over the distance of 600km during which one can rest.

Ok - I misunderstood the math part then:

"Start at 03h00 on Fri and finish at 21h00 on Sat = 42 hours"

Read as if suggesting an allowance of 42 hours, which would be outside the time allowed for a 600.

So can we have a peek at the route details and CP's so we can plan ahead?

The 600 is a repeat of the one some of us did in November. Will get the route sheet on Sunday and post it . 350km - Lido-Heidelburg-Villiers-Frankfort and back. The stretch from Frankfort back to Villiers is tough. The second loop is the Lido - Nigel-Devon-Nigel-Henley-Lido. 250Km in all.

Is that the same as the example route on the web site - or would you have a copy you could post/upload here or email?

I'd like to create my GPS tracks in slow time. They take a bit of tinkering typically, so it's a perfect "in front of the TV" exercise to do whenever idle!

From the information that I have the 600 will be the same route as the one listed on the website under January 2013 http://audaxsa.co.za/sample-routes/ GPX and KML available. Open KML files with Google Earth.
