Is it true that a DJ bike can be used for trials to get you started so to speak? They can be had for a lot less than a trials bike as well.

 

Yes, I started off on the GT Zaskar Trials frame which has a very similar geometry to a DJ frame.

The things that make the biggest difference to a DJ setup is a long stem (120mm), riser bars, 22-18 gearing and good brakes.
