Osymetric chain rings. Is there any advantage?

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone of you with first hand experience who can tell me if these really give you an advantage? I've seen claims of 10% increase in kw and that they are supposed to encourage the "back-pull". Also eliminating the "dead spot".

I've had a short 10 minute ride on a bike with osymetric chain rings, but to me it seemed like "dubstepping" your pedal action and confusing your front derailer while you're hopping down the road.

Any opinions?

Chainrings are shaped more oval than perfectly round. Like so:

It's not my first day on a bike. I know what asymmetrical chainrings are. The other people here are talking all different brand names.

Brand names as in:

O Symetric chainrings are asymmetric

But "osymetrical" isn't a word.

From Osymetric website,

The OSYMETRIC ring is not an oval nor an ellipse – it is a twin cam shaped to win. This patented design reduces the gear and the effort needed to get through what is commonly called the “dead spot” in everyones pedal stroke.

Yes, it's a BRAND NAME, not a generic asymmetric ring. They can jazz it up with all the marketing double-speak they like, it's still a design that rotor brought to the masses. And osymetrical is still not a word.

My post was merely to state what it actually is. You're right it's not a word just like 'watchamacallit'.

Been on Rotor rings for 3 years and when I ride normal blades it's like a pogo stick.......each to their own though I won't go back to normal.. All my bikes have em on MtB and Road bikes, simply love the smooth stroke they give. Am I faster or stronger I dunno, but the ride is more fun and smooth.

 , post of the year, so far. if it floats the boat, if it rocks the bike then go for it !
