Greetings

Both CWC & CRC are having pretty decent New Year Specials on the mentioned wheelsets respectively. The question really is,(1) which set to pull the trigger on ? ... I will therefore appreciate all meaningful input, advice and comment in this regard.

I ride a 2013 Scott Scale 920. The main criteria is an upgrade on rims, therefore the standard weight advantage comes into play but above all else is the Quality Aspect followed shortly by the Bling requirement.

Thanks and I look forward to the responses.

I was also looking at a CRC Eastern Haven set. What made me go CRC: ZTR Crest was simply price.

the CRC order would have ended allot more, with 14% added and the crazy pound/Rand exchange rate atm + shipping.

Ordered on Thursday, was delivered this morning.

Q : Do you mean you went with CWC and the ZTR wheelset ?

I have a love and hate relationship with my Havens.

They're awesome because they are:

  • Super stiff
  • Bomb-proof structurally. I smash through gnarly rock-gardens on a hardtail, without a hint of weakness
  • Easily sealed (because they're UST certified)
  • Amazing to look at
  • Really light (1650g/set)

They suck because:

  • The freehub is about to give up after only about 750km. It slips several times on every ride these days.
  • The rear hub bearings themselves don't stay snug. This is a well-known issue, all Havens suffer from this. The preload adjusted needs a tweak after pretty much every ride to keep play from ruining things. Apparently, threading plumber's tape in there sorts it out, but this is ridiculous on a wheelset costing that much.

If it were possible to lace Hope hubs to Haven rims, I'd have such a set built in a second, but unfortunately Havens are 24-spoke...

I'd go with the Hope/ZTR option.

I have a set of ZTR Arches lacd to superstars hubs - absolutely awesome, very stiff, not to havy even they are rated up to 104kg and the easiest rims to seat a tyre to - even the cheapy wire beads!
