Did you get a large tub of Vaseline?

You must take your own tub of vaseline wherever you go these days to any shop, especially when you know you are going to drive through a few etoll gantries on your way there and back.

Nothing is cheap except perhaps talk and a 2nd hand 26" bike. If I could afford a Specialized Epic frame, surely can afford to buy the swat kit as well. Just saying and yes I am jealous and a regte armgat suurtiet for not having one :(

I agree, its relative. Its like saying I bought a Bugatti, but a tyre at R25k is ridiculous.

Yes, they have a captive market, but again, we bought into it.

Last week, I changed seats on my Epic, and had to buy a new bracket that could take the carbon rails. R500!! But, I didnt moan, as that is what happens when you want to ride a premium bike.

There are of course cheaper options, there always will be, but the RD that has gone into integrating this tool kit is not as simple as them slapping a saddle bag on. The entire frame was reworked to accommodate the two bottle cages and tool kit in such a way that it is safe, clean and has minimal effect on the bikes balance.

You cannot have the best and not pay for it.

I bought a new Specialized Epic frame, which does not come with the SWAT kit. It has to be bought separately. You get tyre levers, bombs, two cages, a tube and inflator, multi-tool and chain breaker.

I have been quoted R 2500 for the kit.

I think this price is absolutely ridiculous ?

Opinions?

Madness.

So you suggest I suck it up and make use of the Vaseline?

If you want the best out of your awesome new frame, yip I suppose so.....

You could put a saddle bag on, but then you might as well have bought a 2013.

They must give a lot of vaseline with that, probably a whole 5L tub.

but hell no, thats thievery. You can buy the same stuff for way much less, it just wont have the specialized name on it. whoever priced that is smoking the wrong stuff.

I dont think its relative. You will get a guy on an epic riding with maxxis crossmarks, and a guy on a cheap bike with maxxis crossmarks. i have a r90 tool and r250 tool, they work the same, they do exactly the same, ther250 one has fallen appart where the r90 one hasnt.

so to me, its a bunch of bs, they just slap on the name and charge more. pretty lame

Im a believer of "goed koop is duur koop", but in this case duur koop will not necessarily the best option as its over priced, and you can get exactly the same value exuipment for much less elsewhere and still have spare change to buy 2 spare tyres.

Doesn't help the black box is hideous......but what you say makes sense. maybe they'll come up with a better design next year....with a duly increased R&D price tag attached !!

I doubt you can buy the same stuff anywhere. This kit has been specifically designed to fit into each other to take up as little space as possible, weigh as little as possible and to fit these specific frames. In a few years there'll probably be cheap knock offs, but currently I doubt it.

Then do that! Seriously. You as a consumer has every right not to buy their stuff, if the value to you does not equal or is greater than the value they are putting on it, then don't buy it.... simple.

I got quoted on an Audi Q5 a while back, wanted to charge me R100k in extras that I belive should come standard on a half million rand car. (leather seats being one of them can you believe it) so it simply was not worth my while and bought something else. We are allowed to do that......

@Gandalf, it is relative. But let not compare wheels with tool kits, that opens the whole new debate, I could easily say rather train 6hours more a week on your cheapy frame and you will be just as fast as if you spent 100k on an Sworks.

I saw a small Carbon pump at the shops yesterday, one that could fit perfectly into a roadie shirt pocket, lekker light too, but at R700.... not worth it to me, but to someone else, yes...

Im sure they will, and I am sure they will sell millions, and I am sure millions more will moan about it. But hey, thats life. Me? I just carry a R100 phone on me and call the wife :)
