Help. Hands go numb after about 20 minutes of hands on STI hoods. I have googled and general info is that lowering the STI's might help. Will tilting the handlebars down a bit be a quick-fix for this?

I had the same, but not after 20 minutes, normally only after a few hours in the saddle.

I have played around with my set-up, so that I am not leaning on my hands as much and that has seemed to help.

Especially moving the seat forward.

Think it very much has to do with the set up

Hi There

I had similar problems myself, I opted to go to a Retul Bike fitting, check out www.retul.com. The bike fit is done via laser analysis, the price can be as high as R1000 for the fit, but it is well worth the money. You will also get a print out of your setup which can be re-used should you ever upgrade to a new bike. The accuracy of this setup is to within 1mm.

This is the preferred system used by Team SKY, Garmin-Sharp as well as local team MTN Qhubeka.

There is a retul bike fitter in Durban, below are details.

I highly recommend going this route, as it has made me more comfortable on my bike and has probably added another 3-5% efficiency in my riding.

Gloves with proper padding sorted out my problem. Though I will admit I was getting numbness only on my road bike but was using my mtb full finger gloves. Bought some Giro roadie gloves now.

what you have is entrapment of the ulnar nerve!

had to change my grips to ergo grips on my MTB and wear proper padded gloves on my road bike with a second pair ontop of that!

Long term fix guyon's canal un-roofing (guaranteed fix) or try a bike fit.

I have the same problem.

Physio told me it is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome..... need an operation.

So if it coulf be something else I will be very happy.

I did buy padded gloves and had the bike setup done, but my right hand goes numb......

What else can it be?

Normal issues leading to this would be:

bike set-up as mentioned,

weak core, and/or

overinflated tyres (hard ride)

THIS

if it carpal tunnel the fingers that are effected are the thumb to the middle finger, Ulnar nerve entrapment is the last 2 fingers on the hand.

the un-roofing will fix both conditions as the carpal tunnel and guyons canal are next to each other and the un-roofing allows for the nerves to move in the bigger space that is created.

Same here, sorted me out when I got proper roadie gloves.
