I got a penalty of 9 and am starting in a way lower group than last year even though I am a stronger cyclist.

They used my Burger time from 2012 and ignored my Argus time from last year where I finished middle of my seeded group .... yet now I am 7 groups back ....

anyways ...

The only way PPA would know your now a stronger cyclist is if you post better times which in turn would improve your seeding index...

so the words "seeding race" doesnt exist anymore?

damn why did i pay R220 for 99er and R95 for Journey for Sight and Tour de PPA then! :whistling:

I am now even more happy that I skipped the 99er.

Funny enough they used the Bouchard race and last years argus (with a penalty) for the seeding.

Seeding is less than what I expected - all the way back to L.

But that's what happens when you are slack for a few seasons. :whistling:

I really think it is a great idea if they carry on doing this. At least then people will be seeded more correctly according to how fit you actually are right now.

They just need to be more verbal about this though.

Some people are going to be miffed that they spent money specially doing seeding races and those results that they have "paid more for" arent being used at all.

Anybody knows where to find a list of all the seeding events with Beta factors allocated to it? Requested it from info@cycletour.co.za but no reply yet

Just want to use it as guideline to choose my races for this year better

I know the values can change for current year due to other factors, like wind etc. – but it will be a starting point

This Beta factors has a huge impact on the calculation of the seeding index

They used a race on my calculation with a Beta value of 0.85

If that Beta was one, my seeding index would be enough to qualify for VB (first year as VB)

And for that race my time was only 23 sec behind the winner of VA

Also think event organizers should state the Beta factor when promoting a race as a Argus seeding event.

Don’t just advertise the OFM Classic for example as an Argus seeding event- but also state that it is recon to be 15% easier than the Argus …

Just because a race has a higher beta doesn't mean you will get a better seeding - that's the theory anyway.

If a race/conditions is difficult the beta applied might not be high enough to compensate for your "bad" time.

What you really looking for is a race with a wrong beta  ie a relatively easy race with a too high beta.

On advertising the beta, frankly I think 99% of entrants wouldn't care, and most of the rest would know that a flat race in the Free State would hava a low beta.

I think the most valid criticism is that they are not properly communicating on how they calculate the seeding. I think most people didn't expect last years Argus and other official seeding events to get time penalties for being older than 6 months, that could have been communicated more clearly.

How the seeding indexes are calculated, as well as how penalty points are assigned are all detailed here - http://www.pedalpower.org.za/index.php/results-seeding/seeding/how-we-calculate-your-seeding/

They have to take into account the weather conditions i.e. wind, on the day, hence the reason you won't find Beta values before the events have taken place.

Yeah but this was never communicated that it applied to the Argus seeding too. I'm sure many people would've skipped certain races like the 2014 99er for example; because it would be penalized out of contention for next year's Argus.
