How much mineral oil need to fill 2 brake cables ?

I am going to be replacing my brake cables which use mineral oil. Typically, how much oil is required to fill both brakes ? and can I reuse the older mineral oil in the current cables ? I have a new 40ml bottle of mineral oil, however I wouldn't think that that would be enough.

I've never replaced brake cables before so am unsure.

Not much if the bleed goes smoothly.... that bottle should be enough. Try and drain all the old oil out for a full bleed.

btw, Castrol LHM+ can be used instead of the Shimano oil and it's much cheaper.

+1 on Castrol LHM+

R140 for a litre at Midas, I have been using it for about a year now with no issues.

EDIT: If you are doing a complete bleed and it is your first time 40ml will not be enough, you will spill about 20ml just trying to refill the reservoir and do not re-use the old oil.

Thanks for that one, definitely a lot cheaper than the mineral oil from the bike shops. Will be making a stop at a parts store this afternoon.

there is a thread on here somewhere which explains the differences in oils etc. but it comes down to the colour difference.

if you have shimano brakes with the little bleed screw at the top of the reservoir, the universal avid bleed kit works like a charm, just make sure it is new (dont mix brake fluid and mineral oil)

this is the one I use

I have also been using the Castrol LHM+ oil.

I recently saw hydraulic fluid at the brake and clutch shop for R70/l (I thinks it was Fuchs) I can't see that this will be an inferior product.

Fuchs make good stuff - Silkolene suspension fluid is one of their products and it's what Fox use in their cartridge dampers.

Just make sure you get the right stuff though - LHM is the thinnest stuff you get, anything thicker will make your brakes feel sluggish on the return stroke.
