Strava says 1927m (my ride last year)

That is alot of climbing...

I got 1,126 on my Garmin Edge

i got 1902m from today's recce ride. Polar RCX5 + G5 GPS.

Actual elevation gain for the Argus route is a tad under 1,130m, measured many times across various devices.

I've noticed that Strava on a phone gives massive over estimates of total elevation gain compared to a real gps designed for sport use.

I was feeling nervous about not knowing the Argus route, so I created this. Hopefully it's helpful to others who don't know the route.

The page shows a video of the route, create by stitching all the Google street view images along the route into one file. Next to, and below the video are a map, and an elevation chart. These both have markers on them to show you where along the route the video currently is.

Awesome piece of work Gary, awesome !

Cool thing is that I just did the Argus in 11mins 36 seconds - a personal best yey !!

Crazy question I know - but would now like to do 'The Argus' a bit slower - is there any way to slow down the speed of your video ???

Cheers & thanks.

In IE and Firefox you can right click on the video, and set the playback speed. Chrome is missing this feature, but there is a option to set it via the javascript api, so on my todo list (i.e after the race) is to add my own ui to do this.

I find it useful to pause at key points. This gives you the opportunity to zoom in and study the map, think about strategy, etc.

I'm glad you guys have found this useful.

Awesome work!

Hoping that GoPro 4 will come out with GPS then you could do this in real time with speed, elevation and map tracking interfaces...........

Exactly what I was looking for.

Well done Gary - It's just like driving the route - gives you the heebies, it feels soooo long.

Is there a way of printing out the elevation scale and is it quite accurate.

It would fit perfectly onto the top bar.

Again well done and Thank you.

Rob

Edit: Just went through the first part in slow motion and the elevation scale is very accurate.

The elevation data is from Google's elevation webservice api. As far as I know, their data is from the NASA SRTM data. I have smoothed it with a moving avg. I've done this because it gets very jumpy by Chapman's Peek. I think this is because of the steep cliffs. (You will see this if you look at the elevation profile in Gooole earth.)

So it's accurate enough to let you know how much your legs are going to hurt. It's not accurate enough to do a guided missile strike.

I'm sure I can do this with a video and a GPX/KML file. I'll look into it.

Yhey, I finally got it working in IE 10 +. It's probably also working in Safari now, but I don't have a copy to test on.

Works perfectly in Safari!

You can but you need accurate tracking and synching your video with waypoints and getting the elevation all lined up. And external battery pack for your GoPro otherwise you'll run flat (in more ways than one) at the top of Whine-Berg Hill!
