Cyclist on N1/Marine Dr offramp - riding towards traffic!!

That was me in fact Tomik and I have never been on that route before and missed the correct turn off / offramp. I also thought it may be safer at the time once it happened instead of being hit from behind by a vehicle.

I am sorry Tomik if your whole evening was ruined by a honest mistake I happened to make and you feel better now insulting and abusing me on a forum. I hope your day is now better at my expense.

To the other Hubbers that saw there may be a different outcome to Tomik's abuse. I thank you.

yeah, cool u fessed up, but your actions were still very idiotic. Safer to face traffic than getting hit from behind? exactly what nonsense is this? Imagine more cyclists ascribing to this crap, it would be carnage! Please explain how this is safer especially since the physics says you are MUCH less time to react, and if car and rider connect in that instance, the damage will be worse. much much worse. Dont think of equating it to pedestrians: they have way more freedom of movement and time to react.

Cyclists who do this are no worse than those taxi nuts who take the law, and the lives of others into their own hands.

Capricorn, how can you say it wasnt safer and if the contact happened it would be worse? Cyclists die from being hit from behind, not to sure what is worse than that, please help me understand. Also, at the time of me being unbelievably lost, that option was the safest. Was it wrong? Yes in your eyes, in my eyes? No. Why? Cause I made it back into town safely, showered, had a meal and rode this morning instead of maybe eating through a pipe or worse shoudl I have known I had to please you and your ability to see into the future.

To me that was the safest option and had the most positive outcome as I could see oncoming traffic where before I couldnt and I had no real choice cause I took the wrong turn off. But still.

Just want to confirm then that none of you when getting lost have driven up a 1 way etc and so on? Wow, this place is full of perfect people. It makes Jesus Christ the sinner and you all died for his sins.

Well done for all leading perfect lives. Please carry on.

In what area do you live and where were you cycling from? Lost? Safe? Religion? Self-justification? Me thinks not.

Sworks20, what a good fellow you are. Trying to belittle the guy that actually saved your life: you did read that he had to swerve to avoid you? And then pissing on Capricorns advice by bringing religion into it!

Tomik, don't swerve next time. It is a dangerous move on a dangerous road, you putting your own life at risk.

How do you willfully put yourself in a position where a car needs to swerve to avoid hitting you?

Is that potentially a Darwin Award winner?

Why should a car have to swerve to avoid any cyclist? Surely the car was then too far left?

And this is the problem of riding national roads, like those out near Wellington or Riebeek Kasteel. It's become the norm for drivers to go into the yellow line, though it's illegal. The correct procedure is for the overtaking car to wait until it's safe to do so (these days, that seems to mean crossing double solid white lines).

The cyclist must best evaluate the situation. For example, I know that my road home has the light coming directly into the driver's eyes at sundown. I prefer to ride on the right of that road, knowing from personal experience that you can see bugger all ahead of your car, especially not a skinny cyclist.

"The correct procedure is to wait until its safe to do do".

So when the cyclist is coming towards you, as is the case here, how do you do that? Slam it in reverse and hope nothing is behind you?

Where were they riding? The N1 is not a Freeway until around Koeberg I think......

But I know that you are allowed to ride on the N1 up until the Woodstock turnoff...at least.

UP until the M5.

Koeberg, Maitland interchange.

Trust me I know which roads are allowed as i have made All the enquiries.

Actually inbound to CT, the N1 stops being a highway only at the Marine Drive turn-off. I checked this as I rode into town on Friday. The "end-of-highway" sign is at the Marine Drive turnoff. Appears that what people know for a fact aren't necessarily true.

To Sworks, thanks for acknowledging. I won't use such harsh language next time, and will swerve every time I see a cyclist doing something stupid (I don't want to damage my car, after all).
