Must agree, the Sram GXP isnt a great bb, they just dont last and take on too much water/filth. Problem is the different size bearings needed on each end of the crank arm. Reading back, it seems I can remove the step down collar and use it on a shimano BB - great news.

Previously I had used XTR bottom brackets on my race face cranksets - The XTR is really brilliant, lasted forever.

GXP is really disappointing, especially since it can get ruined after just 1 or 2 muddy/rainy rides.

Or what most people don't know, knock out the non drive side bearing. Inside that bearing knock out the step down spacer.

Now take that spacer and pop it into a shimano bearing and bobs your uncle. You can use a Shimano bb on your GXP crank. Been doing it for years and never had any problems.

This is the spacer you are looking for from the GXP bb.

OK so I made a press and extracted the bearing, it is a tight fit, Problem is I cannot get the bearing back in, it is easier to freeze the bearing and put the cup in hot water, but still short of a snug fit, and the bearing keeps going in skew.

once I do get this right it is just a case of replacing bearing each time, and using the old GXP cups.

I think I need a press to get it in , anyone with ideas??

Freezer and hot water/heat gun is the answer but make sure the bearing is properly frozen and you heat that housing till you can't touch it.

Little bit of oil on the bearing housing and some finesse and it should slip right in, use a socket on the outer race to knock it home.

Have you tried knocking out that collar on the old drive side bearing?

I have 3 dead GXP's sitting at home, going to try get pull them apart :)

Let us know how it goes I'm keen to see if it's possible on the current crop of Gxp bearings.

What I usually use as a press is my carpenters vice as it has large flat faces to push onto all sides on the bearing being pressed into the cup.

Then I place the old stuffed bearing against the new bearing, and then put it into the cup (obviously with the new bearing first so that it goes in, and the old bearing remains loose). Slowly press it in, and as the old bearing pushes against all the surfaces of the new bearing it goes in straight, and pushes the new bearing in to the complete correct depth. usually the new bearing is quite oily/greasy so it slides ok too. The old bearing is then discarded

works ok if you dont have a bearing drift set.

So I went to Bearing man, bought a 6805 bearing R50.00{this is the exact size}

went next door to an mechanic who fitted it with their bearing press R50.00

Total Charge R100.00 New BB costs R475.00

Having a spare set of cups helps keep this in circulation.
