At least Reitz only had to contend with the Khakis and not irate landowners whilst moving out of the Gamka Kloof.....

At least I have got inside info about " 2013 The Battle of Ketoorskop " I will have to sneak through undetected and maybe sleep a few yards away at the entrance of the Leer.

I have met the guys & girls at the bottom of the Leer, they even invited me for coffee in the past, they might have mistaken us for baboons last year. The baboons can get quite a nuisance in the Hel, and the challengers been smelly and very dirty at times could easily been mistaken for our hairy friends.........

Ouboet

The First Ascent Adventure light sleeping bag, no alarm clock needed the cold will wake me in 3 hours time.

The advantage it's light and it has proofed itself in the past years.

Marnitz, take a look at the Bikamper by Topeak....

A ground sheet to stop the cold earth stealing your body warmth is essential too. I have an emergency foil slaapsak that is made for sub zero temperatures. The add is a guy sleeping in a snow drift... It folds up teeny tiny and is light, wind proof and water proof but sweaty..

Remember to take a bike lock and tie it to your arm....... The irony of someone stealing your bike from next to a crazy sleeping umlungu is just too much!

I normally use the back wheel for a very comfy cushion......... in the past the umlungu was more worried about hungry leopards, luckily this time around there won't be to many a chance to bath so the smell of a LION will keep them away.........

Sleeping rough up until Rhodes will have to be in the early morning hours to go undetected and I suspect a lot of very late nights for some tracker followers, I have got a few places in mind but will keep them for security reasons for myself. I'm still very much in love with my tried and tested 26"Cannondale Rush, won't take any chances.

So here are the rough sleep rules as compiled by David Waddilove.......

  • I will eat and sleep at the start and the finish.
  • There are 25 support stations where I will receive meals, shower and charge batteries.
  • There are 5 interim stops where I can call in for soup or whatever food they offer.
  • I am allowed to make use of 6 support /interim stops for emergency accommodation.
  • A support station is the house and a radius of 2 km's around it.
  • If I spend more than 2 hours at any support station it will be counted as a sleep.

Les than 12 weeks to go, time to start sleeping rough !!!!

Min dae Boet!

The strategy looks good, you just need to feed yourself properly and a few bottles of 5 Hour Energy won't harm you either.

Happy training

One week and a month from start date, hopefully I have done enough training to complete the race in my planned time. For me it always feel if I could have done more, if ever you can do enough training for the Freedom Challenge.........

I now only need to keep the focus on the last month's training, it's getting more difficult by the day, it might be the dirt roads that is in very poor condition. You know the condition is bad when a bakkie is unable to overtake you on a dirt road, I am mostly sticking to the friendly farmers jeep tracks, don't get the desired distance but a 100% peace of mind and no swearing !!!!

Butterflies in the tummy, I will just have to make it happen.

At least I don't have any second thoughts about making it happen, just need to push as far as possible every day !!!!!
