A question: if i were to sell a bike to someone in JHB. What would be te easiest way for me to get it there from here in KZN?

Courier?

What are the options?

I recently bought a bike from someone in KZN. He used Time Freight couriers. Cost about R500 to get it to PE, so might even be slightly cheaper to JHB. I'm sure others will have couriers that they can recommend as well.

If you know how to pack a bike (this guy did) you can get it all inside 1 bike box that you should be able to get from a lbs. Basically, wrap the bike in something like bubble wrap - all the areas like fork stanchions, etc. Take off the wheels, handlebar, chain, derailer, pedals, saddle. If you google you'll find instructions and pics to help.

Have done the reverse...jhb to dbn

Bought a cardboard bike box from cyclelab....bubble wrapped and packed nicely with foam where frame and components could take a bump or two in shipping process. Went to courier guy, and handed box in...paid 400 bucks and got it courier'd to buyers door.

Did they really SELL you a cardboard box ?

Dunkeld Cycles sommer gave me one - I suppose it saved them the hassle of throwing it away - the last time I travelled with a bike.

Mike's Bikes have done the same.

I need to ship a bike from EL to JHB. The bike comes with a bike bag (Race Case). Would it be sufficient to ship in the bike bag, or should it be boxed too? From checking this and other threads, it seems like Time Freight is the way to go, anything specific I need to request when placing the collection order?

I dont know if there is a Cycle Lab in EL and if they ship frequently between that branch and JHB one, but sometimes Cycle Lab assist with things like that at a lower cost.

I shipped a bike from CPT to JNB using a company called Triptych, they apparently do alot of bicycle transfers, paid R250 excl. They do the shipping for some of the brands and i knew the guy said the had a couple hundred bikes in transit during the W2W. Send me a PM for Andrew's contact details.

Thanks Haley. The number i found for CL EL was out of service, and the jhb branch wasn't the most helpful. Got some advice from them, good to ship in the bag.

Found East London Cycles through ecmtb.co.za, and they'll bubble wrap and bag it for me (R350) and then can use Time Freight for shipping.

Just spoken to Andrew from Triptych, sounds like a great service. Very well priced too. happy to be dealing with someone who specializes in bike transportation over a regular courier company.

A race case will be more than sufficient. That's actually a hard plastic box, very nice.
