Looking at purchasing the Novatec Flow trail 650b wheelset from Evobikes.

Anybody got an independent opinion on this wheelset as I have never ridden them before.

Like the price

Like the weight

Like the fact they are wide!

Like the fact they have a rider weight of 120 kg! Means they should be bulletproof!

Don't know too much about the Novatec hub so feedback on that would also be appreciated.

Putting them on my Trance 650b so hoping for a fun ride!

I have the flowtrails 29" on my bike. Loving them. They have taken some poorly planned knocks, as in I was thinking about something else and didn't see the massive rut in trail. They come with all the adapters to make them fit any axle type and you get some spare spokes as well.

Just take note, that although the website says tubeless ready, you'll need to seal to rim with tape and the syncros tyres I got with them didn't play so well. Kept popping and spraying stans everywhere. This has stopped since fitting normal Maxxis crossmarks.

I'm running a 29" set as well.

So far: Super stiff, light and the finishing is really great (much better than a comparable Mavic set, to be honest).

Oh, and the freehub sound is totally wicked. With 6 pawls, it's somewhere between an I9 and CK. Love it!

You won't regret it. Bonus is the new hubs can be converted to just about any "standard" by simply swapping out end caps.

Just to weigh in here. I've had a set of 27.5 Flowtrails for over a year now, and the rear spokes are snapping with alarming frequency. Almost as if they've reached their sell-by date. I've been replacing as they break - retensioning and truing as I go, but last weekend I had 3 go - right at the hub flange. Off to get the wheel rebuilt today. Methinks meatier spokes; the existing ones look a little thin.

Having said this, I have abused them totally. And despite the broken spokes, the rim still runs true.

An update: I snapped a rear spoke as well this weekend, so going to replace it this week sometime. Like Pipsqueak, my wheelset has seen hard riding, but not a lot of riding to be honest. Plus, I'm light so it's still fairly unexpected. They've been stellar otherwise though!

Another update: It was a snapped nipple, not a spoke. Marc at Crown Cycles reckons it's inevitable for this to happen to aggressive wheels running alloy nipples, as opposed to brass ones.

Solution? Rebuild it with brass nipples. Luckily it's a cheap fix!

Further update: The rebuild revealed at pretty much all of the alloy nipples had started corroding (the Stan's obviously contributing to this) so it's a good thing they were replaced anyway. Brass all the way!

Had the rear wheel rebuilt with slightly heavier spokes. After riding up and down the Himalayas - the down was very rough, steep and fast (5.1 vertical KMs over 93KMs) - very rocky... They're perfectly true. Very happy with these wheels, you may just need to watch the OEM spokes.
