AMARIDER 100MILER & 50MILER IS A MUST-DO FOR MARATHON RIDERS

You have done most marathons and tried stage racing. How about an individual one-day mountain bike ultra marathon of 160km? The scenery is beautiful in the Swartland during Autumn and the riding is not technical.

Endurance riding has exploded in popularity over recent years and this year will see the sixth edition of The Amarider 100Miler taking place in Malmesbury on the 24th of May. From the humbling beginnings that grew in 2009 to what is now one of the must-do-events on the mountain biking calendar.

The weather conditions play a major role in testing your endurance, as mud, wind or rain do on most outdoor events.

This event will start early morning just as the sun is rising, with astounding scenery that is spellbound to keep the legs going for many hours. Only pre-entries will be accepted for both distances. Entries are limited and remember that this is a seeding event for Die Burger MTB Challenge 2014.

The 160km (100Miler) route is divided into three sections of approximately 55km with two compulsory timing checkpoints. The format of the race creates perfect vantage points for spectators and support. While the competition is based on solo riders completing the entire course these riders can form 4-man teams and enjoy a day out with mates on a saddle (of course)! The team results will be based on the 4th rider crossing the line thereby encouraging teamwork and camaraderie.

The shorter route option of the 50Miler (80km), starts at the halfway mark at Riebeeck Kasteel and ends with the 100Miler riders at Swartland Winery. This event also provides an opportunity for keen riders to taste endurance riding along with twist and turns against the clock.

This route has been developed with the co-operation of local farmers and landowners who gave permission for the organisers and cyclists to have access to their properties. This type of support forms the foundation of Amarider which endeavours to bring new routes to riders and new riders to existing routes.

DATE: Saturday, 24 May 2013

TIME: 07h30

DISTANCE: 160km with an 80km shorter option

Pre-entries opened the 17th February and close on Monday, 19th May 2014. No late entries will be accepted.

According to Meurant Botha, director of Amarider, the 100 Miler was created to become a primary fundraiser for the organisation. Amarider is a recreational trails advocacy group focused on improving trail opportunities on the African continent and proceeds of the event are channeled directly to trail projects. Amarider is focused on improving trail construction standards around the country and assist various mountain bike clubs to ensure that their trails are safe and environmentally sustainable.

Finishing the Amarider 100 Miler within the allotted 10hours 30minutes cut-off time is one of the most challenging endurance tests!

So how many Hubbers are doing this event?

I'm entered & was hoping to improve on my 8h30 from 2012 but after suffering a bruised/cracked rib on my last XCO race on Saturday I'm now not sure it will go any better in the 2014 edition.

I am in. Looking for my first sub 7 hopefully. Fingers crossed!
i'm with you on that goal copperhead but training has just not been there since our son was born. I'll go balls to the wall from the start & recover towards the finish.

mmmm, I really enjoyed it first time, second time was 2 weeks after Sani2C - what an anti-climax!

That said, I do enjoy the different type of challenge these type of dirtroadie races are, saw on Twitter there will be a record number of entrants so the vibe should be good!

Every single time I plan to take it easy from the start but I always buckle to the group pressure and go all out. Happened on every epic stage - the first hour 80% MHR... Dunno how to solve this... ;-)

I entered for the 50mile. But heard now my daughter has a choir thing that I need to attend. If anyone still want to enter and is willing to take mine from me, please pm me.

I will sit in the theater thinking of whaat i am missing.

I am really interested in the 50 miler. But not having done one before the logistics confuse me. Not a lot of info on the 50 miler. How tough is it etc. Would love to do it, but a bit cautious.

You are watching your daughter, you should not feel like missing anything at that point.
