A waste of a human being had a swipe at me with an object (knife/screw driver) an hour or so ago.

It happened at the top of the open field climb by the gate just off a busy republic road, couldn't believe it! Reported it to the metro cop a few meters down the road - but doubt that anything was done about it!

The baboon was wearing a blue overall, black cap and black and orange tekkies with no laces - around 6ft tall.

Sick and tired of this bull-sh#t! I'm not prepared to stop riding that route as a result - what are guys riding with nowadays - pepper spray?

Pepper spray will probably only give you a false sense of security, because I don't think that carrying a canister in your jersey pocket (or strapped to your bike frame for that matter) would've prevented this idiot from attempting what he did. The best deterrent is to ride in a group, or at least with a buddy.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It serves as a reminder for the rest of us to be more vigilant...Glad you're ok.

Thanks mate - I tend to agree, it wouldn't have helped today. I enjoy going on a solo ride now and again, but I suppose it's not worth taking the chance!

I really love doing sprit solo... Stop for pics and just take in the awesomeness of trail and Joburg. But I only ride the dam and spruit till fralellies alone. Any further to republic only with a friend, from pick n pay I avoid unless it's a whole group.

I agree this is so sad these thugs mess with the city's beauty

I regularly ride solo from Emmarentia to Fratelli's and back - usually, in the dark - and I have never had an issue. Early in the morning (05h00-ish), there's NO-ONE about.

Don't really have any other choices...

In the last two weeks (6 or 7 rides) of proper darkness, I have seen the sum total of TWO other guys riding before the suns comes up and they were both head UP towards Emmarentia.

I often see the roadies around emmarentia at 5h15-ish but NEVER another mtb'er going DOWN to Fratelli's.

Yes, there are LOTS of guys riding UP from Fratelli's - that's where I meet my buddies.

If I had no choice, that would probably be a better route. Other side Fratelli's and by PicknPay it starts getting Ga, Ga, GANGSTA!
