Gonna stick my neck out here.

Langvad and Kleinhans are spectacular and have created some of the best stories of the race. Full value for money.

But is the rest of the ladies race really worth equal prize money? Only 21 ladies teams competing. At end of Stage 3. only 6 within one hour of the leaders (after the 1 hour penalty). 8th position is 2 hours down (ie 3 hours riding) which is approx 17%. In the mens race there are 31 teams within 3 hours of the leaders.

Perhaps the prize money should only go down to position 5 to sharpen the competition. Keep the winners purse equal to the mens.

Interested in other peoples' opinions. Maybe it would just be too unPC to consider this.

Only 9 men's teams are within 1 hour of the leaders, and 13th place is over two hours down. Your comparison almost follows the World Marathon Champs ratio - 77 male finishers compared to 30 female finishers - the field is roughly half as big.

Apart from team RECM Specialized, the women's racing looks quite intense. The only way to up the standard of womens racing is to let them race in the same way the men race. Open up the race, don't close it down. Otherwise racing in the mixed category becomes the more appealing option, and that's just about whose mother is best at reinforcing pockets on cycling jerseys.

Does the prize money actually mean much? i don't really know what sort of a paycheck susi is on, but even if he wins overall and half the stages he gets half of R220k, and i'm sure there's loads going into the pot for mechanics and support staff. His spez racing contract must have much bigger bonus clauses on it.

You need to come about 5th or better just to get your entry fee back. Go down to 10th male and the guys will get R10k plus maybe R3k from stage placings - to split.

I don't think the money attracts any male teams at all, they're racing for prestige/teams at that level. The women might not be nearly as 'competitive' (if half the entrants finish in the money) but you might find it grows the field.

Did not follow the thread closely today, so something along these lines might have been mentioned already. Anyway, I think WP3 on today's stage was placed too close to the end and too far away from WP2.  A large proportion of the field took in the region of 4 hours or more to traverse that section. That is just too long without the possibility of a refill. Heck, even the leading pro's took more than two hours to get from WP2 to WP3 - on average they take about one hour or a bit between waterpoints. Speaking as an experienced backmarker, closely spaced waterpoints in the second half of a stage can be an absolute life saver.

The forecast for tomorrow is even warmer than today with the temp in the mid to high 30s and a significant headwind. Here's hoping for properly spaced waterpoints.

So heard some sinister reason for the nic lomond column getting pulled off cape times last minute, they're not devoting a single inch of paper to it. Not even results. The good doctor needs to get looser undies

I enjoy the Lamond brothers' company as much as I like reading Nic writings. Everything is an adventure. Wonder what the Cape Times' motive is? Is Nic perhaps an under cover DA agent?

I think today should be interesting, if Topeak has any chance of making this a race they will have to make a serious move today.

At least some of us know it's Lamond .

This happened last year as well. They kept us up all night. Really bad. Tried to inform the Epic as well and it seems they just didn't care.

Why should they care, come on let's be honest about it "we are making it your race by moving the race village for your pleasure and comfort"
