Anyone doing this?

I possibly could be down there for business next week and thinking about taking the bike and having some fun on a flat fast course.

I am doing it, looking forward to it, but a bit worried that there will be some chaos on the bike course with triathletes and their typically bad riding skills. There are apparently going to be a number of start waves, so hopefully the groups aren't too big.

I cant imagine that there isnt road closure, they simply cant have a thousand or so riders thrashing around those busy streets without closure.

remember to take your road bike, not your tri bike (I take it its draft legal?)

Yip, drafting allowed, no TT bikes. But clip on bars that don't project past your brake hoods are allowed

Age Groupers is non drafting, from the website FAQ. By implication TT bikes are allowed.

What are the Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town distances?

Olympic Distance (Standard): 1 500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run

For the elites it is a draft legal race, for the age groupers (open races) it is non drafting

Sprint Distance: Usually about one half of an Olympic Distance race, Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town offers a 500m swim, 20km bike and 5km run

I don’t have a fancy triathlon bike, can one use mountain bikes for the mass participation races?

Yes mountain bikes will be allowed so as long as they conform to the ITU competition rule No. 5.2

Drafting, when will this be allowed, and when not?

The age groups 20 to 70+ will not be allowed to draft. Age group 16 to 19 will be allowed to draft. Elites will be allowed to draft.

Amazing that there is no Athletes Guide or Rules either on the CT site or the series site.

Agreed, it is pretty poor that there are no rules on the website. I was looking for rules on bikes and aero helmets but nothing on the site, I have emailed the organisers re road closures. I may just take my road bike and my TT bike just in case I can ride the TT rig

Please post as soon as you get a response. I can only bring one bike down. Using a road bike in a non drafting event is pointless.

Want to see them enforce this one.

  • The bike will be no more than one meter and eighty five (185) centimeters long, and fifty (50) centimeters wide

Looks like partial road closure in parts, full closure in other areas. My coach says tt bikes should be allowed as it is non drafting, but still not 100% sure

A friend of mine called the race organiser to confirm whether TT bikes are allowed.

He says the guy he eventually spoke to sounded pretty clueless and he had to explain to him that a TT bike was one "like they use at the Ironman".

The guy then confirmed that we would be able to use TT bikes, but I'm bringing both bikes just in case.
