The principal is that Garmin or similar devices are not manufactured in SA. Therefore, no discouragement to buy from overseas because you do the local economy no harm. Clothes on the other hand are manufactured locally and contributes to jobs/the economy. Therefore you are discouraged to buy from overseas by high taxes...

It is a generalization which negatively affects you if you want to buy a clothing item which you cannot find in SA, but I suppose it does help the local situation.

I see~~ thank u for the explanation!!!

I hope someone import Rapha from UK... :'(

Put it down to a learning curve, research first and know the full costs before you buy online overseas to see whether it is worth it

I underestimated SA tax.. I thought only 14%... hahaha

Yes it was my fault. Now I know it so I wmould send a stuff to my sister is in UK and send me that by an airmail (?) As a present. :)

Or never buy anything till going back to my country... :'(

What you forget is, that you also pay tax in terms of Schedule 2 of the act. Anti-Damping and countervailing duties on imported goods.

Hello~ I would like to ask u something about tax

I ordered two socks, one cap and two water bottle from Rapha in UK

And I paid them for $118.5 which can be approximately R1300

And I got a tax invoice from DHL they got it from the airport

They say I have to pay R837.54 for tax.

Is this right? My items value is only around R1300

And they charge me over 50% tax.

Ps. Late year I ordered approximately R4400value items from chainreactions. And I paid tax R740 (?)

What should I do?

Recently SA gave me lots of **** experiences.. so sad

I haven't read the entire thread, but if you're buying Rapha kit why are you whining about the tax?

Image costs..

Yeah, it's rough

I always buy my gear when I travel or ask friends to bring it over (just have to wait for the opportunity though :-/)

That Rapha gear is cool though.
